My thought is that this is a collection of the novelized versions with a page count like that. Then again, I was under the impression they never finished with those books. And the cover certainly doesn't look like a novel collection, it looks like a TPB cover.
BN has the same listing, with no cover photo. Guess we'll see.

These telephone book-sized 'omnibus' editions were started by Marvel I think, a few years ago, but at a much higher price. I think they usually run about a hundred bucks a pop, so this is really not a bad price.
Top Cow/Image did put out the hardcover edition seen at http://www.amazon.com/Rising-Stars-J-Michael-Straczynski/dp/1582404887/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199386262&sr=8-2 on Amazon. I think it was just a collection of the 24 issues and the preview releases. With the new TP at almost double the page count, and additonal writers listed (including Fiona Avery), it also probably includes all the spinoff titles done for the series (most written by Fiona).
The series was stalled for over a year and a half while Straczynski worked out some issues with Top Cow. During its run, Fiona did one miniseries, Bright, and then two more (Untouchable and Voices of the Dead) after Straczynski finished the final three issues.
Details on the release dates and such can be found on the Comic Book database at http://www.comicbookdb.com/search.php?form_search=rising%20stars&form_searchtype=Title
(ignore the Tokyo Pop title).

Wow that went quick. I see amazon already lists it as "Temporarily out of stock". So has anyone here picked this up yet? I'm considering it but was waiting on confirmation of its contents.

Went quick? I don't think it went at all. I preordered mine back in September of last year, and all I got from Amazon was a notice that it was delayed again and again.
Now they say by March 1. I often wonder if the book is actually going to come out at all.

Odd... the website sill says it was released on Dec. 15 and that its out of stock. Sounds like an odd thing to say if it hasn't been released yet. Then again this wouldn't be the first time I've seen errors on a site. In this case it could be something as simple as they haven't updated the listing since the new delay. I wonder what the reason is for all the delays.

I've had a few email exchanges with Top Cow (http://apps.facebook.com/comicbooks/publishers/Top%20Cow)'s publisher recently (unrelated to this title, but related to what's due to ship) and this isn't a book that's on the radar for the next while at least.

I have all the issues already. Any idea on what extras or new material will be included in the compendium?

No idea. I just wanted it because 1 volume takes up a little less shelf space than 5. I started last year converting as many runs of my comic collection as I could into TPBs and HC's because I needed the space.

I have that hard-cover collection. It is all 24 issues, but no extra material. I think I bought it for $60. That book is not the same as the Compendium that still has not been released. As I understand it, the new Compendium is supposed to be like an encylcopedia + the comics or some kind of thing like that. A guide to the series too.

The new Compendium is offered in the new Previews from Top Cow as a 1008-page hardcover for $99.99
(Issues #1-24, #0, #1/2, and Prelude, plus Bright, Voices of the Dead, and Untouchable)
I have no idea what effect if any this will have on the Compendium TPB that I preordered on Amazon for $37.79, though I suspect it'll probably be pushed back another year or so...
Still, progress!

Click the cover to see the 'solicitation' info (http://apps.facebook.com/comicbooks/editions/rising-stars-compendium-2008-1-hardcover), and you can then 'add to list' there if you want an automatic reminder of when it ships to comic stores.
It's funny how they make the 'mock' image for the solicitation -- that's no where near wide enough for 1,008 pages, and it's a compendium so the 'vol 1' on the spine is pointless too.

That cover is from the old out of print Rising Stars collection that was published some time ago, and yeah, the book was much thicker too (it was $70 and had all 24 issues).

Gary Frank is also getting a lot more attention now with his run on Action Comics with Geoff Johns.
Hmmm... That gives me an idea to try for our 2010 Comicon here in Phoenix.

Woohoo! Looking forward to getting the Rising Stars hardback and reading that for the first time. Though I'm a little ticked off I bought Midnight Nation so soon before there'd be a beefier edition. If the extras are worth it I might double dip and gift the tpb I have to someone, since it's a fantastic book. Gary Frank is fantastic - loved the Supreme Power/Squadron Supreme work he did with JMS too, where you could tell he was born to draw Superman.

Previews solicited the Rising Stars Omnibus TPB for March '09.
However, last I checked, the hardcover due in december still isn't out yet.
I know comic book delays happen all the time. I still hate them. It's even more frustrating when you know all the "real" work (writing, inking, coloring, all that) is done already, because the individual issues have already been out ages ago.

The hardcover been given a date of March 4, 2009 (http://apps.facebook.com/comicbooks/editions/rising-stars-compendium-2008-1-hardcover). I have a feeling this is one of those projects that just keeps getting pushed back the more movie stuff jms gets involved with. I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones who picked up the $70 book. Perhaps it will be worth more as this compendium seems less and less likely to materialize.

I just registered to this forum for the sole purpose of telling you that I just received an email from amazon.ca telling me that they are getting ready to ship my order for the softcover of the Rising Stars compendium. Woohoo!
I had ordered it back a year or so ago, then cancelled it and reordered it back in February this year when talks started showing up that it would eventually ship.
This thread here has been my source of information for the last couple of months so I just thought I'd share a source for the book for canadian shoppers. The book is indeed in stock. :)

The softcover ($59.99) is indeed due in store tomorrow. The hardcover ($99.99) came out last week.
You can check out a 50 *50!?!* page preview (i.e. the first two issues) if you want a refresher. It looks like it's using one of the old trade's introductions by Neil Gaiman too if you've never seen that, you can read it there too.

Amazon.ca actually sends you an email when they're preparing to ship? Cool. US Amazon never sends me email unless they've shipped... or there's a problem.
Which probably explains whi I haven't gotten any email about the Compendium (heck, the site still says "get on our list to be emailed when this is available," and I ordered the darn thing back in '07!

even better than that, they send you an email to let you know that they are still trying to obtain a copy of an item.
I ordered it on February 4 with two other books. One of these two was 1-2 months delivery and the other I didn't mind if I got very late. They sent me an email on March 19 saying they were still trying to find copies of that one book and of the Compendium. Funny enough, March 23, they sent me a second email to let me know they were shipping those two books and that the Compendium remained not yet shipped.
April 18, another email to let me know they were still trying to obtain a copy of the Compendium.
April 27, email saying they were getting the book ready to ship.
TODAY! 3:58pm eastern, a final email to say IT HAS SHIPPED!!!! WEEHEE!!! :)
Sorry, don't want to rub it in anybody's face, just very stoked about finally getting a chance to read it. Yeah, I've never read it. I've only been into comics for a couple of years though.
In my to read pile is also the softcover of the new edition of Midnight Nation. :)

Well there it was, both hardback and softcover sitting in the comic book store over the weekend.
Question:
Why is this Rising Stars Compendium called Volume 1? What are we to expect in volume 2 after getting all of the main series and spin-off comics in volume 1?
I think it may be a Top Cow thing. IIRC, there was a 'Volume 1' on one of my Midnight Nation collections, too, even though the entire collection was in the one book.

Man, do I wish amazon still used UPS all the time. There's nothing like two-day shipping.
