During the credits, Marcus sings a good bit more of it. They should have had a PPG blast effect right after the end of the song.

Indeed he does. But The Whole Thing (http://diamond.boisestate.edu/gas/pirates/html/p13.html) is far far more effective, and may in fact cause real-life gunshots.

Drat! Just about to post and Rad beat me to it!:mad:To heck with it, it took me so long to type it out I'm posting it anyway! :D
The song? From Gilbert and Sullivan's the Pirates of Penzance. Marcus sang the first verse, which I've reprinted here. Please excuse any mispellings or incorrect words, I did this from memory. When I saw the episode back in the first run of the series I went out and found the song and learned it. It's DIFFICULT. Especially the third verse, which one sings almost twice as fast. Even after years of practice I still struggle with the darn thing. Here we go:
I am the very model of the modern major general,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral.
I know the kings of England and I quote the fights historical
from Marathon to Waterloo in order categorical.
I'm very well acquainted with all matters mathematical,
I understand equations both the simple and quadratical.
About binomial theory I'm teeming with a lot'a news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
(chorus)
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
I'm very good at integral and differential calculus,
I know the scientific names of beings animalgulus,
In short in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
I am the very model of the modern major general!

Wouldn't it be "Matters of Honor?"
It's called a "patter song," which G&S wrote almost exclusively for their comic baritone roles (this one is sung by Major-General Stanley in "The Pirates of Penzance (or The Slave of Duty)." They are _all_ loaded with many words and many syllables, and meant to be sung quickly. You could almost think of the comic baritone from Gilbert & Sullivan's original opera company as the Fed Ex guy of his time. (Remember the guy from the Fed Ex commercials who spoke very fast? That's who I mean.)
As for the lyrics, you were very close, but here's the correct set:
I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England and I quote the fights historical,
From Marathon to Waterloo in order categorical;
I'm very well acquainted too with matters mathematical,

About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o'news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
(chorus)
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypote-pote-nuse
I'm very good at integral and differential calculus,
I know the scientific names of beings animalculous;
In short in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
(chorus)
In short in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
He is the very model of a modern Major-General.
(And the rest:)
I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's,
I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox,
I quote in elegiacs all the crims of Heliogabalus,
In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous.
I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
I know the croaking chorus from the Frogs of Aristonphanes,
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore,
(And here the baritone pauses comically, pretending to be stumped for a rhyme to "din afore" - and eventually coming up with "Pinafore," another opera by Gilbert & Sullivan)
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.
(chorus)
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore,
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore,
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pina-pina-fore!
Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform,
And tell you every detail of Caractacus's uniform;
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
(chorus)
In short in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
He is the very model of a modern Major-General.
In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin,"
When I can tell at sight a chassepot rifle from a javelin,
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat,"
When I have learned what progress has been made in modern gunnery,
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery:
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy,
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee.
(chorus)
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee,
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee,
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a, sat a gee.
For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury,
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
(chorus)
But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
He is the very model of a modern Major-General!

Ackk. That has to be Londo, but I can't remember the episode.
When I can tell at sight a chassepot rifle from a javelin
Interesting. The version I downloaded used "Mauser Rifle" instead of chassepot.
Ben-Thayer, my source (and I have G&S all over the house, in scripts, books, CD liner notes, etc. etc.) was the beautiful, big hardcover book that Doubleday put out when I was still working there: Isaac Asimov's Annotated Gilbert & Sullivan. It has all of the libretti, and notes. In most cases, he explains where (and why) changes were made in the lyrics. For instance, there's a famous snippet of lyric in The Mikado which is _never_ performed as written by Gilbert anymore, because it contains a horribly derogatory and racist term.
Anyway, for this one, Gilbert did indeed write "chassepot rifle," after a new (in Gilbert's time) musket that the French Army had adopted in 1866. The mauser was invented in 1871, plenty of time to be included in the lyrics of "Pirates of Penzance" (which was first performed in 1880), however, it's not what Gilbert wrote. The reason it gets substituted often in performance is that it's easier to pronounce. Nonetheless, written versions will always have it as "chassepot."
BTW Aisling, just took a look at your photo page...OMG! Outrageous! How long did you keep the graphics? Very impressive! And so geeky-cool too......
Thanks. You're talking about the car, I take it? Well, SciFi had some guys come to strip the car _right_ after LotR aired, however, I convinced them to let me keep G'Kar on the back window. He's still there, two and a half years later! You can see him in the pictures from the Hawthorne convention:
www.fjordstone.com/jmscon (http://www.fjordstone.com/jmscon)
Look for the picture where JMS is leaning against the car.
Anyway, yeah, it's fun to have him there - G'Kar, I mean - and sometimes people can even properly identify him!

On the mauser/chassepot issue, I downloaded a copy of the lyrics way back in the 90's during the first run of the series. Not sure where I got them, but they used mauser. I'll go with chassepot from now on........is it pronounced chaz-pot?
I always struggle with: "I quote in Elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalous, in conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous" Difficult to recite as well as understand. After looking up elegiacs (mournful sorrow for things long lost) and Heliogabalous (controversial Roman emperor) that one was done, but the verb "floor" was tricky. I finally found an archaic definition: To finish or make an end of; as, to floor a college examination. Still bloody difficult to recite quickly!

No, that particular conversaion was in "Matters of Honor" after Sheridan thanked Kosh for saving his life and Kosh mentions what a strain it was to be seen by so many.
In "All Alone in the Night" Kosh uses the "You have always been here" line twice. Once in Sheridan's dream/vision when Kosh tells him that his mind had never been quiet enough to hear him, and later as Sheridan leaves Medlab.

-BDT-- for guotes as cheesy i reccomend a sentence of no less than 3 Lon Island Ice Teas. folowed by an uninterrupted viewing of the entire 3rd season of ST:Voyager...unless everyone feels that is too harsh...
I got another quest:
in "Late Delivery from Avalon" at then end, Marcus is talking to Ivanova I believe..anyway..
"If Sheridan is Arthur, and Delenn is ovisously Gueniviere....."
how does the rest go? I know he left an important character open wasn't it Arthur's son? and was it ever revealed?
tks
Ranger 6 and 7/8---hoping to be a full fledged 7 anyday now.. "I been waiting for my pike for 6 years now..how long i gotta wait?
Thanks be to Google. The Zocalo #60 had a synopsis that gives you the general gist of what Marcus says at the end. It's a paraphrase, but it's close enough and I don't feel like going and getting the season 3 DVDs right now.
So, Kosh is Merlin, Franklin is Percival, Marcus is Galahad ("...me being sinless and all..."), Sheridan is Arthur, Ivanova is perhaps Gawain. They
both know who Mordred is. And that only leaves..."who is Morgana le Fay?" Which is revealed very shortly after that episode.

bakana

For the people who were speculating about which characters were who in the King Arthur mythos, here's what JMS said back in 1996:
RE: "B5 is really X in disguise" You're all right, and you're all wrong.
Is it Lord of the Rings? Dune? The Kennedy story? The saga of Camelot? The
Foundation? A brief history of World War II? The Bible? All these and
others have been broached to me by people absolutely sure that this was the
model for the series. (And, as an aside, this kind of discussion generally
happens only to TV writers; nobody here is doing a panel called "Is Startide
Rising Really X in disguise?" This happens to TV writers because somehow it
gets assumed that we haven't got an idea in our heads that we didn't swipe
from somebody's book. But that's another topic for another time.)
Babylon 5...is a Rohrsharch test. An ink blot created by smashing
actors, archetypes, saga-structure, myth and language against a sheet of
paper, folding it, and bashing it a few times. When you open it up and look
inside, what you see is the saga closest to your heart and your experience.
Because like all the works mentioned a moment ago, B5 draws upon the same
wellspring of myth, archetype, symbology, and dime store sociology that feeds
all sagas, from the Illiad on through to the present.
Writers, science fiction writers in particular, are like the beggar in
Alladin, who offered new lamps for old...we seize myths that have fallen out
of currency and recast them in newer guise, dust them off and hope a genie
emerges. Our myths, the myths of Tolkien and Homer, of Heinlein and Mallory,
are eternal; they exchange one name for another, cast off one mask and assume
the next. If you perceive their presence in Babylon 5, it is because we have
courted the myth, not because we have echoed one of their names from another
place. King Lear vanishes into Londo, Cassandra peers out from behind the
eyes of G'Kar, Galahad answers to the name Ivanova, the Oracle at Delphi is
now wearing an encounter suit, and Sir Bedevere is...well, that would be
telling.
So you're all right. And you're all wrong. Because it's all ACTUALLY
based on the 1967 Young Juveniles novel "The Mad Scientists' Club." And I'm
actually channeling Eleanor Roosevelt. (Fortunately, I already have the
wardrobe.) Oh, yes...and I am the walrus, coo-coo ka choo....

I can't wait for the B5 quote book to come out! For those who missed it, JMS said at the Hawthorne con that "But In Purple, I'm Stunning" should be out around Christmas from Simon & Schuster.
You know how JMS said in the Severed Dreams commentary that Delenn's line warning off the EA ships off was hands down the favorite line of the entire series? That's because when the idea of the quote book was hatching, there was a site where fans could post fave quotes and stories of what various quotes meant to them. I'm looking forward to seeing the result.

That's G'Kar to Sheridan. End of Objects in Motion.
JMS used that concept in Sleeping in Light, when Sheridan returned to the empty B5.
Also in the episode was the lousy intel of the Rangers, they couldn't deliver Zack's invite because they couldn't find him on Earth. How could they not get simple info like that about routine Earthforce assignments?
It's interesting that you say "two people said this," because in reviewing the series for the seventh or eighth time straight through (not sure which it is!), I'm noticing more and more how JMS reuses lines. Not in a "I'm a lazy writer" way; but more as leitmotifs. I really like it. Just last night I watched "Soul Hunter," and the Soul Hunter says to Delenn, as he has her tied down and is about to extract her soul, that she isn't to worry, because "if you fall, I will be there to catch you." This has echoes in Delenn's line to Sheridan when they're in the White Star and she turns on the rain sound effect ("I will watch - I will catch you if you should fall"), and Lorien's line to Sheridan in whatever episode that is (can't pull it out of my head right now - Jan? Anyone?).
Anyway, this would make a good thread, I think!
