View Full Version : Announcing the Skywatch Game!

Jan
11-17-2008, 04:11 AM
The few of you who play over on the Moderated Newsgroup may already be familiar with this. I've decided that a guessing game that I run over there should be expanded to the folks over here as well. What's the Skywatch Game, you ask? It's a guessing game for us to guess WHEN JMS's projects will be announced and WHAT they are. As it happens, JMS just posted to the game thread over on RASTB5M with some tantalizing information:

Just to play along, and add a little fuel to the fire....

There are three non-comics, non-B5 projects that are signed, sealed
and contracted for that have not yet been announced.

One of them is the least likely thing anyone could possibly associate
with me.

One of them will come as a surprise to some but not to others.

One of them is a return to form.

There is a fourth project which is two meetings away from being
concluded. If this one happens, I will die a happy man.

jms

This is a perfect time to jump in because the game had kind of died out and there was only one outstanding guess left.

So just to go over how it works. You guess a date and you guess a form. I keep
track and when a new JMS project is announced, whoever's got that date can win.
For instance, I just guessed Feb. 6, 2009 for a Feature film-Comic based. If
somebody else wants to choose the same date and guess the announcement will be a
TV series, that's fine. If the announcement is a Feature Film, I'll win the
Fabulous Skywatch Prize. If it's a TV series the other guesser gets the
Fabulous Skywatch Prize. If there's only one guess for that date, that person
wins the Fabulous Skywatch Prize even if they get the form wrong.

The announcement has to be from a trusted source such as a studio, reliable
trade publication or from JMS himself.

What's the Fabulous Skywatch Prize, you ask? Here's the *minimum* that you'll get:

- A Quote Journal with "The future is always changing. We create the future with
our words, our deeds and with our beliefs." on the cover.

- A MicroMachine of the B5 Station. This is a single, still in the package.

- A B5 blinky that was given out at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con to promote the Lost Tales.

- a B5 photo keychain

- at least one button and one magnet from my collection (these are
pre-redesign). If you're a winner I'll happily look to see if I've got a quote
you request.

Up to now the Skywatch Game has been limited to the RASTB5M group but I'm inviting the folks at the JMSnews Forums to play, too.

Here are the current guesses. The field's wide open so let the guessing begin:

02/06/09 Feature Film -Comic based Jan RASTB5M
1/1/2019 Swedish "Meatballs" remake Duggy RASTB5M

Has anyone ever been successful in this game? To guess the date correctly seems awfully unlikely.

Anyway, since related to "Forbidden" he talked about two other projects, and sometime ago asked for research help about societies a million years into the future, I'd guess an adaptation of "Childhood's End" (or "End of Eternity"). The other one might be Joe Haldeman's "Forever War", as Scott is reportedly currently in the process of looking for a writer.

Date? No idea. Could be anytime on Daily Variety. Let's say Jan 24 2009, and Feb 14 2009, just for the fun of it.

Yes, one person was last year. She got a 'Never Surrender Dreams' journal, a mini-comic from Lost Tales that I got JMS to personalize and autograph for her at a con and various buttons and magnets. As I recall, she had the date right but didn't guess the project. That was okay, though, since she had the only guess for that date. Yes, if you win and want me to, I can take an item to have JMS autograph/personalize to you the next time I see him at a con.

Dec. 21, 2008 A romantic comedy movie.

Not a problem. I'm then naming the feature film adaptation of "Forever War". Date changed to Jan 16, 2009, because Feb. seems to be a bit late.

Yes, Joansie was the winner last time. Poor thing waited *forever* for her Fabulous Skywatch Prize but I finally got it to her.

So what happens if you get the date wrong and are the only one who guessed the project?

That *might* qualify for a Special Prize as Designated By the Prize Committee (composed of I, Me, Myself and I :)) but we'll have to wait and see if it happens.

Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors feature film!

Since the non-B5 comment only referred to the first three, I will put my money here and will say B5 feature film, and announced on February 1st, 2009.

That's one reason why I decided to open the Skywatch game to posters here. But...you wouldn't want the Fabulous Skywatch Game Prize? Gasp! I'm crushed...

I'm not a collector at all . I'm a bit Zen about this thing, trying to buy as few things as possible that I know will only end up filling space on my shelves.

I'm probably wrong with Haldeman; it doesn't really fit the latest 4 items list, unless there's another project not yet signed. But never mind.

Guesses and speculations off the record:
One of them will come as a surprise to some but not to others.

There has to be something in the mills having to do with very advanced societies. And it must have been signed months ago, since he went on research tour for it in August.

One of them is a return to form.

That's probably a TV series, either "The Group's" project, or the non sci-fi related show he talked about earlier this year. What was that, didn't he say a comic-based thing? I think it was for BBC?

One of them is the least likely thing anyone could possibly associate
with me.

Gods, can he be a little more cryptic. Horrible man. The least likely thing? A textbook "How to transform into a morning person"? A documentary "Most famous mathematicians"? A kids and cute robots show?

There is a fourth project which is two meetings away from being
concluded. If this one happens, I will die a happy man.

Could be the next Superman movie, could also be the next Star Trek series. I think it's too early for a B5 feature, at the very least I'd expect them to wait until Star Trek XI to see if that succeeds.

JoeD80

at the very least I'd expect them to wait until Star Trek XI to see if that succeeds.

Well he said project #4 was two meetings away from happening. Since jms gave WB an ultimatum that he wouldn't do any more B5 until they greenlit a feature, he certainly doesn't think it's too early, and I don't know why they would use Star Trek to decide whether to do B5 since those aren't made by the same studio.

Zoltan

Others have mentioned the possibility of a Superman movie. My initial response to his project #4 was the same, but now that I'm thinking about it (and the movie is already taken ;)), I'd guess it's a Supeman comic. Jms would probably have more freedom to flesh out his ideas with this icon of his in comic book form.

Superman Comic: December 30th 2008.

For those paying attention, there *was* an announcement in the Dan Didio interview I posted yesterday.

But at the same time, hes really excited about the Red Circle
characters so much so that hes going to be writing a series of one shots
later this year to introduce all of those to the readers too.

So...another Fabulous Skywatch Prize goes unclaimed. Meanwhile, Joansie and NotSoWize are eligible to put in new guesses.

New year's coming folks, while you're working on your resolutions, work out when you think another JMS project will be announced.

All I know about it is what Dan Didio said in this interview. (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/120824-DiDio.html) I'm not very conversant with the DC univers characters.

I did a littler digging:

I say February 1, JMS is announced to be the write of the Mighty Crusaders for DC (think Avenger-ish..different superhero/metahuman group than JLA)

The 'Red Circle chracters' refers to a line of superhero characters created for Red Circle Comics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Circle_Comics) that DC comics has bought the rights to, and intends to reintroduce as chartacters in the DC Universe. Originally JMS was going to take care of these introductions in 'The Brave and the Bold' (a comic series that features team-ups of DC universe characters with no fixed cast), but now the focus has shifted such that tBatB is going to stick to well-established 'classic' DC characters that JMS wants to write without having to worry too much about maintaining continuity with the other books they appear in, and he'll introduce the Red Circle characters in their own one-off books.

Last night JMS announced that he's working on a new pilot for TNT called "Last Words". Sadly, nobody had guessed January 2 for any type of project/announcement so the Fabulous Skywatch Prize remains unclaimed. As you can see, there are a few people who can enter new guesses.

For anybody just joining us, the Skywatch Game is an ongoing game where posters (or Lurkers) post their guess as to what announcement of what new JMS project will come when. More than one guess can occupy a date; for instance a feature film can be guessed by one poster and a new comic project by another. Winners will get a Fabulous Skywatch Prize consisting of fun B5 stuff ranging from quote gear to collectibles.

If you don't see your name, feel free to give me an update. As they say, you can't win if you don't play!

2 B5 Quote Gear buttons
A B5 blinky from SDCC when Lost Tales came out
A Micro-Machine of the Station
A B5 Quote Gear journal
2 B5 photo keychains
A rare B5 shot glass
A rare B5 mini-comic from the Lost Tales DVD autographed by JMS

From time to time I drop something else in, particularly if an announcement comes and nobody's guessed that date.

Just found this over on Newsarama:

Inferno will share the spotlight with the Shield, the Web, and Hangman in a four-issue Red Circle miniseries by J. Michael Straczynski scheduled for later this summer.

http://blog.newsarama.com/2009/04/21/dc-lights-up-inferno-with-jg-jones-and-jesus-saiz/

or

http://tinyurl.com/cplc2r

Inferno is one of the Archie characters and we already knew that JMS would be playing with those in the Brave and the Bold series but I'm pretty sure that this Red Circle miniseries is a new announcement.

So! At long last...the winner...who'll be getting a Fabulous Skywatch Prize...is.....

Nobody. Wes had a guess in for yesterday and if this article had been dated April 20, he'd have won even though his guess was for a Spider-Man feature.

Sorry folks. You've gotta guess if I'm ever going to send out this prize.

As has become traditional, I'm adding to the Prize and tossing in a deck of the Australian playing cards. I'll post the latest list again tonight.

Jan

raw_bean

Actually this was announced before (in an interview with someone from DC editorial on Newsarama - I want to say Dan Didio?) to be the new plan for introducing the Red Circle/Archie characters into the DC universe, allowing JMS to just use already established iconic DC characters in The Brave and the Bold. I'll try and find the link.

EDIT: Here's the interview I was remembering (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/040901-DiDio-20A.html) where the Red Circle characters having their own miniseries was mentioned (the fact that they were no longer going to be in The Brave and the Bold but something else was vaguely mentioned earlier even than this):

First off Dan, is there any update that you can give in regards to J. Michael Straczynski’s projects starting up? You’d said that the Red Circle (Archie Heroes) stories had been pulled out of Brave and the Bold into their own projects, and that they’d be launching sometime later this year. Is there any closer date you can give on that?

Dan DiDio: Yeah – I can update you on that. He’s doing a four-part series called The Red Circle, which features four of the prime characters from those series of books: The Shield, The Web, Hangman and the Inferno. He’ll be writing this four part story that introduces them, which will also include a semi, soft link of their four origins, and more importantly, setting a direction for each of these characters, and the series will follow after that. We’re looking for that to start in late summer.

Newsarama: And he’s writing another project on top of that as well?

DD: Because we moved these out of Brave and the Bold, he’s moved back on to Brave and the Bold as well – so he’s working on The Red Circle and Brave and the Bold. But he does have other projects with DC in addition to those.

Although no-one guessed anything comic-booky for April 1st (the date of the interview) either I think, so it makes little difference.

Jan

Thanks, raw_bean. This changes things so I'm going to go back and check my original rules and see what it says. I know that if only one person had claimed a date, they'd win even if the announce project wasn't what they guessed. I'll see if I'd thought of what would happen in the case of a multiple or not and make a ruling soon.

Thanks for the research!

This morning I posted a link to a Newsarama article about JMS doing a Red Circle miniseries for DC using some of the Archie Comics characters. At the time I thought that that was the first time it had been announced and so there was no winner in the Skywatch game.

Thanks to raw_bean, it turns out that I'd missed a previous instance where Dan Didio talked about the miniseries in an interview on Newsarama on April 1.

Though nobody had guessed a comic, we did have *two* guesses for an announcement on April 1 and so I went back to check the rules I'd posted originally and found that I'd declared that anybody who guessed the correct date would get a prize.

So congratulations are in order for

4/1/2009.....B5 movie based on Bk/Gquon.....Gabi.....RASTB5M
4/1/2009.....SF novel-based feature.....Nash 0819.....JMSnews

I can't duplicate everything in the Fabulous Skywatch Prize so I'm going to do my best to divide the items I can't duplicate fairly.

Gabi and Nash 0819 if you'll email or PM me with your addresses I'll get your prizes out to you soon.

Congratulations to you both.

See, folks? You CAN win if you keep your guesses current.

Thanks, Lee. As it happens I had posted a question about it on the newsgroup since I hadn't seen TNT's lineup. It just showed up this morning so I don't know if JMS will see it before he travels but a couple of other posters linked me to the lineup. I really would love to see JMS-written TV again.

BTW, I seem to have forgotten to post that I did hear from Nash0819 about the prize. He asked for it to be auctioned for charity so I'm going to get another mini-comic autographed by JMS tomorrow (if possible) to help increase it's value.
