Yes, this book is via Publishing 180 and Cafe Press will be doing the fulfillment. I'm sure the announcement will be coming out shortly before the wide release.

There's also a very special book coming by Harlan Ellison. If you're on the mailing list already, you won't need to sign up again when the big announcement is made in the next (I believe) couple of weeks.

I *finally* got my copy delivered today! No, not the final version, the in-progress version that Pat Tallman was selling at Comic-Con last week. In my infinite 'wisdom' (not!), I shipped it home with some other stuff to save weight and keep things pristine. And I've been itching to read it ever since. As I said, it finally arrived today.

This is a lot of fun! Personal and funny and sad and did I mention funny? Lots of great photos, both candid and posed and a few stories that you may have heard from one point of view told from Pat's point of view. Other stories you've never heard at all.

Oh, yeah...you know the test-tube scene on the Vorlon Homeworld? Yeah, there's pictures from that episode. :p

I really enjoyed it and this was my first look because I wasn't involved with this book much at all.

So who are Synthetic Worlds Publishing (I noticed the B5 related books seems to be split between it and Publishing 180). Is it connected in anyway with Synthetic Worlds ltd.

Jan
07-28-2011, 10:48 PM
Synthetic Worlds is JMS' corporation, Publishing 180 is headed by Captain Jaclyn and the Kilimanjaro corporation holds the copyrights to Harlan Ellison's work in his new book "Brain Movies", also published by Publishing 180.

To be pedantic, Harlan's book is published by Edgeworks Abbey. Only the Other Voices books were published by Publishing 180.

What are the rough specs of the book? How many pages? Are the photos in color inside the book or just on covers?

Jan
07-29-2011, 02:37 PM
Only the covers are in color but the photos inside came out really nice (unless they were blurry to begin with, which a few were). Don't know how many pages the final version will end up being since the one I bought was 'in progress' so that Pat could share with the fans at Comic-Con.

I love the design of the book. It's got a touch of steampunk, which I gather Pat's fond of. There are some lovely acknowlegements, dedications, appreciations and a small forward. JMS even wrote an introduction for it.

How many pages? And, approx. how many pictures? (I know it'll just annoy you if I ask, "How many pictures of Andreas out of makeup?," which is basically what I already asked you over on b5tv.com, but can I at least ask if you think I'll find it worth my while? :) )

Jan
07-30-2011, 02:54 PM
As I said above, I don't know how many pages the finished version will have. The one I got was 265 pages. No idea how many pictures and not inclined to count them and add extra wear to a 1-in-50 collectable; maybe there'll be a count in the sales copy when the finished product comes out? Ditto photos fo Andreas but there are some from Be Five recording and a couple more from Wolf 359 and the SF magazine awards. Others that don't immediately come to mind.

Whoops, I'm an idiot, I missed that entirely. Sorry to make you repeat yourself.

No idea how many pictures and not inclined to count them and add extra wear to a 1-in-50 collectable

Thanks. I guess I was wondering something more like: are there multiple photos per page, or just one per? Because if multiple, they'll be sort of small, yes?

This is a complete digression here, but I was actually on set when Pat did her 'pleasure threshhold' scene with Andreas and the thing that struck me the most was the number of different variations she did with that line, from just throwing it away to making it very sexy. That may well have been the only time I ever got to see those two actors working together, which is why I remember it so well.

Jan
07-30-2011, 06:56 PM
Thanks. I guess I was wondering something more like: are there multiple photos per page, or just one per? Because if multiple, they'll be sort of small, yes?

It's a range but I'd say that the majority of the time it's no more than two per page which is just slightly smaller than a regular printed photo. Lots of instances of just one photo per page. From what I can tell (not being any kind of photographer), the sizes are appropriatly sized to the captions and other text. The collage style on the cover isn't repeated inside the book, if that helps.

Re: Being on set for that scene. Once again I massively envy you, Joe.

I guess I'm expanding my reviewing to be more than just comics.

I enjoyed the book. It's funny, cute, a lot of good stories, and holy gosh I didn't know that many pictures were out there that I'd never seen before.

It might be nice to see a pdf of a couple of sample pages to see how well the photos do come out.

Another idea that would be nice is if buyers of the book could get a pdf of the book with photos in color. To make sure people don't spread it the copies could have the subscriber's name encoded in it in the background. That way if someone illegally distributes it you know who's copy it is. [Big Finish does this with Doctor Who scripts.] Or perhaps subscribers could be given access to the photos in color online in some kind of flash viewer that couldn't be copied.

It just seems a shame to have all these color photos out there and buyers of the book just get black and white copies except for the covers.

By the way, I just noticed that there is a countdown clock on the webpage now - counting to August 17 release date.

Per a new blog entry, (http://patriciatallman.us/) the results of a meeting between Pat, the book's designer and Editor Jason Davis are that the final book will be pushed back until mid-September so as to add things fans have asked for (see the 'what do you want' thread) and to add quite a few more pages.

Press Release via Facebook: (https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=217183925005668)

...this behind-the-scenes peek into an actor’s life during the “B5 Years” is a very personal, honest and occasionally spicy memoir. Make no mistake, this book is not for kids! There are a ton of Pat’s personal, never-before-seen photos, which gives the readers a chance to look into her life and the B5 experience through her eyes. Pat’s unique perspective covers her work on the Paramount lot on all three “Star Trek” shows as well as the first feature for the “Next Generation” crew. She also shares details about her years as a stuntwoman on TV and film, while working on Babylon 5, and tells how that affected her work as an actress.

JMS posted about one of the special things about the upcoming book:

I think this is the first time anyone from the cast has done a book like this, certainly the first this thorough, from her POV. It's also signed by she and me, since I did an intro to the book, and there are going to be some big surprise features as well. (Again, the usual disclaimer: I get no part of the sales on this book, it's being done via Jaclyn's company, and I own no part of that, either. Just helping out what I think is a really cool project.)
(emphasis added by me)

So, the regular edition is now being signed?

Signed by both JMS and Pat. And the content's been expanded a lot (almost double the word count, I hear) with even more pics than the Comic-Con edition.

ETA: Just realized that the question may have been more of a question as to whether there will be a 'regular' and 'delux' edition. As far as I know, there will only be the one.

And from what I hear, something else *really* cool that's never been done for any of the other books. I can't wait (no, I'm not being a tease, I haven't seen what it is yet, either). :D

Jan

And the lines are open! This is pre-ordering for release on Sept. 21. JMS posted:

As posted elsewhere (and apologies for the double-posting twitter-folks), Patricia Tallman's new B5 multimedia memoir is now available for order. There's a big book with a gazillion photos PLUS uncensored audio commentary on an episode, PLUS an audio interview I did with her that's even MORE uncensored, plus videos, an intro I wrote AND we both signed it. www.b5pat.com

Woo-hoo!! NEW commentary! The disk included with the book includes a new commentary for "Secrets of the Soul" with JMS and Pat. Can't wait for that. The videos look to be very cool, too.

Way too much is listed in the sales copy for me to list here but I'm looking forward to it a lot. There are almost 100 more pages than the Comic-Con version and I already enjoyed that one a bunch.

The only possible criticism is that, as mentioned previously (and assuming this is still correct), the photos in the interior of the book are black and white (and I am assuming that there are not color versions on the disc).

Not that I know of. And last I'd heard, CP wasn't able to do color photos on the interiors of their books.

Yes, I found a coupon ....
First I found one that expired yesterday and then a few that didn't apply, but I found
CART0913
which gave me 20% off.
I had added a Lost Dharma magnet to bring my order over $50, so I don't know if that was needed, but I got over $10 off, so that paid for the magnet and shipping.

By the way, when I signed off they asked me to "like" Cafe Press and that revealed another code - LIKEIT - which is good for 15% off with a $30 minimum.

You honor US with your presence here... I for one am awaiting the book, since the B5 Universe deserves to be explored further... Working as a contractor I get MANY looks from people who see my B5 posters and ask what's that all about.. After we talk, more want to see the show than don't just after the 2 minute overview I give them of the show and what it showed could be done...

Happy Release Day! Quick reminder that the debut discount for Pleasure Thresholds (http://www.cafepress.com/b5pat) is only through Tuesday the 27th.

I haven't made it a point until now to tell y'all that I've read the most recent version of the book. Jason asked me to do a run-through late last week as a fresh pair of eyes to help prevent typos from sneaking though. I figured since I'd read and enjoyed the Comic-Con version that it would be quick and easy. But while it was an enjoyable task indeed, I had to keep reminding myself that reading for enjoyment wasn't why I was in the file - I had a job to do! I simply kept wanting to get lost in the writing.

Pat's a lovely lady. Many of us have met her at cons or read her blog (http://patriciatallman.us/) or follow her on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/patriciatallman) or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/#!/PatriciaTallmanPage) and we've seen her Be A Santa campaigns (http://www.beasanta.org/) and we already know this. She was a favorite character on a favorite TV show so we're interested in her as a person, too.

Pleasure Thresholds takes you on a trip with a lady who's chosen a difficult and sometimes dangerous career, shows you the endless work involved in maintaining that career, talks about Babylon 5, some of the people she worked with, played with and cares about, some great times and some bad times. And not only tells you but shows you the photos so that you can see it along with her. If you liked Pat before, you'll love the genuine person you'll get to know in her memoir.

This is the most ambitious project to date for Publishing 180, with so many photos woven in with the narrative of the book as well as the CD-Rom and postcard that will be coming with each book. So even though I've read the file, I can't wait to get the whole package!

Congratulations, Pat! And thanks to Jason and Captain Jaclyn for making it happen. Oh, and JMS, too for the interview and new (:D!!!) commentary.

Any suggestions? Or any other working coupons at the moment?

I seriously wish the JMSbooks folks would stop rounding down the price so I can use coupons... or allow the option to buy it at 50$ even or something.

Plus I'm still a bit outraged that shipping to canada is still more than int'l...

Sam.I've been buying LOST Dharma magnets with my last few orders. In the past I also bought Peanuts magnets and GrimJack magnets. The coupon that I used didn't require a minimum $50 expenditure - I think it was for 20% off - not as good as the $15 off that OmahaStar found, but still not bad. That was CART0913, but I think it has already expired. Try http://www.couponchief.com/cafepress and they might have a new one.

Ok so I called cafe press coz this was irritating the heck outta me, and discovered the following, which may be useful to others in the future.

The coupon will NOT work if you add an item from the main cafepress site... it seems to only work with "shop" items like "jmsbooks".

Except there is a way to convert any item on the site to a "shop" item - and that is by searching cafepress.com for the item number and adding "030-" at the beginning.

So for example, after clicking on the link to the doctor who pin you sent - it would not accept the coupon if i added that to cart from the linked page.

the item number is : 455014104
so I searched for : 030-455014104

And voila! that page provides an item that when added to cart allows the coupon to work...

AND AS A BONUS - its 50 cents cheaper. lol. Cafepress is really screwy.
---
Sam.

EDIT: YAY! it worked! And I even found a decently cool Zelda button that was only $2.00 (http://www.cafepress.com/lake_hylia.89314026) and as a bonus, this time it didn`t raise the shipping cost (when added from the site and not shop it added 3$ to shipping cost!)

Total cost w/ shipping: $47.49 - much better then 60$+.

Again -> cafepress = screwy...

Ok, now that's bizarre. It was 2.49 for me to start with. And the top of the page is a picture of a guy with a mask and "The Doctor Says" on it ... When I click on the same link, it takes me to the same item, without the banner, and now it's 3 dollars. Then I search for the item number, same 3 dollar page. Item number with 030- in front, and back to the page I had originally.

I don't know what kind of games cafe press is playing, but it's messed up.

It reminds me of those stories about Best Buy having two websites. An internal one for people inside the store, and the real one people could access outside, with different prices.

That's a touch paranoid and really un-necessary. I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs (because I'm simply not interested) but when a person creates things on CP, they can do it as a one-off, create a shop or just create something that's available on the 'marketplace'. Price structures and, if applicable, commission rates differ for each. Omaha seems to have been looking in the shop named "The Doctor Says" which is why his search results came up the way they did. If I have a shop and buy my own stuff, that's still another price (yeah, I created a shop when I made t-shirts for Comic-Con this year).

It's interesting info, thanks SamusekTDS.

Nono... it makes a sort of sense. There's the "hub" site cafepress.com which hosts all these microsite "shops", of which jmsbooks is one, or b5pat, or b5quotes or thedoctorsays...

items listed in the shops can also be listed on the hubsite, where they fall under a unified pricing and search scheme. The above are all my educated guesses. I have no personal experience in this. Its just weird that the pricing is different and the coupons don't work.

But then again this is the same company that now charges more to ship to Canada then to China.

Anyway I hope future books don't cost as much as this (the signed thing is only gonna entice me a couple of times) and cafepress realizes their shipping cost mistake.

Did you ask about that when you called? I gather it's something that's been going on for a while now. I wonder if it's a customs thing maybe?

For me, the autographs aren't as much of an enticement as the idea of new commentary. I'm really looking forward to that!

A customs thing to Canada that does not exist for the rest of the world? And I asked but the customer service folk don't have any information - I can't reach anyone there about this who would have any sway and I've tried emailing different departments, etc. It just seems like an error to me. I've never seen Canada shipping be more than international EVER. With ANY company.

And books are supposed to be duty free under NAFTA.

I'm also excited about the "multimedia" stuff. But I was referring also to the Ellison book, which was also 50/70 instead of the usual 30/40 which I already find a bit high.

Eh... I was enticed enough to buy this one, but I'll probably just get the remaining WTHH books and call it a day at this point. I need to try very hard not to blow my own mind with how much my "B5 shelf" has set me back. LOL.

(This is not to say they haven't been great, or that the work on them is not appreciated, or that I don't understand independent book publishing costs, etc etc... just purely on a personal "enough is enough" financial level. Wish I was richer.)

That's a touch paranoid and really un-necessary.

It's not paranoid. Best Buy really did have two websites. When you'd go to one of their computers to search inventory in the store, they'd have the in-store price listed. If you'd go home and get online, searching for the same thing, you'd have their online price. It was specifically done to trick people who were trying to price-match their website.

Lawsuits came about, former employees admitted it, scandal erupted, and suddenly there's no second, in-store website anymore. Google it sometime when you're really really bored.

<happy dance> I got it, I got it! Yippee! </happy dance>

As those of you who've followed this thread already know, I picked up the 'in process' version of Pleasure Thresholds at the San Diego Comic-Con and enjoyed it thoroughly. Then *just* before the book was locked and went to print, I had the opportunity to read the final version which was, incredibly, *better* (hear Sheridan talking about G'Kar's Declaration of Principles there). That was reading and working at the same time, though, so I'm really looking forward to settling in and reading it at my leisure.

But the brand new (to me, that is) thing in this package was the CD which I eagerly gulped down (yeah, I gulped) in the last few hours. No spoilers, here, but let me tell you that this was FUN! There was JMS telling Pat stories and Pat telling him stories and both of them telling us stories. In both the interview and the commentary, it felt as though you just had a couple of people talking and we just happened to be around while they did.

The rest of the MP-4s with Pat were cute and a nice addition even though a certain chicken tried to upstage Ms. Pat. Personally, I think he may have been trying to become as famous as Sinclair's Duck. :D

Hope the rest of you get yours really soon. I'm looking forward to us being able to discuss what our favorite parts are without spoiling the rest who are waiting (though...I'm not sure we can wait for a 6-month customs delay - sorry!).

Going off to read Pat's book and enjoy the entire experience at leisure. Nice work, Pat! And thanks *very* much for sharing with us.

Yes, Pat's book was published by the same folks as the B5/Crusade books.

I know these comments are probably going to annoy a lot of people here, but I was looking at Pat's site not that long ago, where she had asked readers to tell her (and others) what they thought of the book. After reading a number of different posts, I realized that people here rarely share their thoughts about a particular book. Just to be sure, I went back and looked at the threads for various script books and more recently, Pat's and Harlan Ellison's book and the discussion usually goes like this: 1) Lots of excitement after the initial announcment is made. Posts from various people who have ordered their book, as well as well as discussion about where they can get a coupon for a cheaper price, 2) Lots of excitement while people wait for their books to arrive, and C) Lots of excitment from people who either got their book, or compaints from people in country x who are still waiting for their copy to arrive. It's almost as though the acquisition of the book is more important than the book itself. I know this doesn't happen all the time, but if I was a casual fan wanting to know if I should splash out a chunk of money on a B5-related book and I came to this site to see what other fans had to say about it, I'm afraid I wouldn't get much helpful information. It's almost though once people get their hot little hands on a new book, that's really all that counts for them. As I said, this is just my opinion, but it's been bugging mefor a little while now so I thought I would mention it.

Naturally, I can't speak for anybody else here but it's worth noting some of my experiences standing in JMS' autograph lines over the past few years while the script books have been coming out.

In many cases, I've seen folks bring the books for JMS to sign that have never even been opened. Not just the plastic, even the white bumper boxes, completely untouched. So we stand around talking about B5 and I drop little tidbits that JMS has shared from the introductions, memos or photos and they're spellbound. I've always wondered if, after they were opened and autographed if the books ever really got read.

In general, I've had folks seem to be shy about possibly saying something similar to what's already been said but I wish that weren't the case. There's always new viewpoints and tidbits that come out when people share their opinions.

There’s something I’ve become very aware of, due to yon site that I recently closed the book on (the pun wasn’t actually intended).

I’ve noticed a strange dichotomy about much of the net. You get review sites and people sharing thoughts on everything all over the place. Yet at the same time people don’t tend to share information anywhere near as readily. This is going to sound combative or judgemental (but it’s not, honest).

Information (as opposed to opinion) on the net sometimes appears almost like a tradable commodity. You’ve probably seen an example of it where someone provides a link to a source and they receive kudos for finding it, and are thanked for sharing it. I’ve seen people recount comments held on yon site I put together but phrase it in such a way that it’s themselves that are “vaguely remembering” something.

I’m not trying to imply anyone here is deliberately not sharing their thoughts on the books because that would mean sharing some of the content (information) but an environment like that can create a situation where people just fall out of the habit of spontaneously sharing things, other than their opinions.

Going back to yon site, I provided a half dozen copies of it to folks who claimed they wanted to host it. Only one did, the others are archiving it on their drives for their own personal collections!! Weird, and why I’ve made the entire thing available as a download to anyone who wants it. I think information as well as opinions should be shared preferably at the same time (but I’m a socialist at heart).

Jan, I know exactly what you're saying. I have a good friend, whose home I've only gotten to visit once or twice, but the first time I was there, I noticed shelf after shelf of DVDs still wrapped in their original cellophane. When I asked why he still hadn't watched X, Y or Z, he told me he just hadn't had time. That's the kind of acquisitive mentality I've never been able to understand. I keep a small pile of DVDs next to the TV and a pile of books on the bedside table and I try not to let that pile get too high, because it just gets too unwieldy. I suspect if you let the pile of unread script books get too high, you're just never going to get around to reading them all.
