Here's a lead for the SyFy channel:

Quote:

SyFy Channel web site says this:

If you have suggestions or comments for our Programming Department about Syfy or any of its shows, please contact:
feedback@syfy.com

Send an email asking them to take up B5????
Okay, Babylon 5 Rangers, go to it. A nice, polite note asking them to run Babylon 5 (and Crusade and the movies). Point them to the Twitter and FB hashtag #FreeBabylon5 so they can see how much interest there is.

Looney 09-02-2013 06:17 PM

Okay, I've opened my big mouth about it. I hope you start seeing hits on Facebook and Twitter. And I also said to join the discussion here, so maybe we'll see some new members too. :D

BTW - LOVE THE LOGO

Jan 09-02-2013 06:33 PM

Thanks. A fan made a banner and I cropped it to use as my avatar.

It's pretty amazing - 537 'Likes' on the Freebabylon5 Facebook page and it's only been live for about 5 hours!

Now all we need to do is get everybody to *act*!

Jan

cornholio1980 09-03-2013 01:34 AM

First of all: I think this is a great and wonderful idea. I remember being at PCC and trying to get some people to watch the show, and whenever they asked me "where can I see it" I was like "Uhm... well... you could always buy the DVDs, I guess?" It really sucks. Getting B5 on the air and on streaming-services like netflix and hulu is absolutely imperative if we don't want for Babylon 5 to go away quietly until it's only a long forgotten memory shared by a small, if fortunate, circle. A new cheaper 20th anniversary complete DVD set - or even a Blu Ray-release (and yes, I know that it's more likely that hell freezes over; just wishful thinking here) could work wonders too.

Having said all that... I find myself having a little trouble really getting behind this campaign myself. Not for the reason Looney mentioned, but because it seems rather US-centric. I'm obviously all for it, but I somehow can't shake the feeling that it's YOUR fight. I mean, wouldn't it be a little flimsy for a European to get actively involved in a campaign to bring B5 back to US television?! And when it comes to campaigning for Germany (where B5 was last shown in 2011, and Crusade just a couple of months ago, so it's not quite as bad over here), I just don't think that we'd get any significant numbers to actually raise some heads. Thoughts, anyone?

Also, I really wish this campaign would have started during the PCC reunion frenzy - might have been easier to create momentum with so many fans - and fan groups - gathering there. :o

pascalahad 09-03-2013 02:43 AM

Pretty much the same page as cornholio1980. From France, there's not a lot I think can be done here. Babylon 5 was never aired on mainstream tv channels, only on a paying channel, Canal+. The tv movies were aired on smaller channels, and that's it (but that's not better for Star Trek mind you).

The dvds have been released, but never the pilot episode, and neither were the Lost Tales! I write once a year to WB to ask for them (and various DC animated movies that never made it to home video here+The Adventures of Brisco County jr... WB never listens but is always polite in saying "don't even count on it").

I lent the dvds to everyone I knew by now. They loved the show but I'm not sure they would be actively campaining. Passion is sometimes a lonely world.

Jonas 09-03-2013 03:44 AM

Yeah, the US-centricity is a bit of a problem, but not one that can really be solved. Hollywood still tends to see the US as the centre of the world, with international sales being a lot less significant to whether something is considered a success - though this is slowly changing.

One thing that might help: get some celebrity fans to tweet/post about it. Damon Lindelof is a big fan, I think so is Steven Moffat. Even just a few words from these people would help raise the show's profile.

Thank you, Jan! I knew I could count on you for a straight answer; now I know, it's given me something to focus on. That's all I ask; I need a focal point, I'm that kind of chap. So cheers! :)

It helps to know what the hoped-for end result is, and the reason I say that is because I've seen revival campaigns before, (not B5 but elsewhere), and not only can they end with a crushing "No,", they can also have the very people you're trying to help turn against you..., so I'm grateful to Jan for giving us all something to aim for together. As long as we're all on the same page, we'll hopefully avoid the experiences I've seen before. Us B5-ers have gotta stick together!

I've asked the Missus and friends to add us to their facebooks, and I will try to get in touch with the station that first aired B5 in the UK, (I'm in the UK's broadcast range). They have a sister channel aimed at teenagers, where they broadcast 'Charmed', believe it or not my Mum's fave TV show! If they can broadcast a fantasy show produced at roughly the same time as B5, then surely they've got room (on their main channel or their teen version) for repeats of B5....

valens_shadow 09-03-2013 05:02 AM

when I googled #FreeBabylon5 yesterday it came up with four results. A little while ago it now comes with three pages.:D

how about posting #FreeBabylon5 across somewhere like Amazon.com ? Not even solely on Babylon 5 related products/topics, but anything and everything on the entire site, reviews, questions, comments. Maybe it will get people talking or even the media pick up on it? I know it's a gimmick but isn't all publicity is good publicity?

I think the point of the campaign is to get the show back on the air in some form in the U.S., however, the GOAL is to increase interest, motivate the fans, and increase the number of U.S. fans. Growing the U.S. fan base with the obvious large number of worldwide fans creates more of a force to be reckoned with. It also shows that we are a unified worldwide fan base if we have all of the support possible from people outside the U.S. Having that as public knowledge can could actually be the reason people become fans. Knowing there are fans everywhere can make people want to become fans. And more fans hopefully translates to good things. And Facebook is a place where numbers of fans can be displayed and shockingly might produce a result.

Wow, some cool things happened overnight! First off, Ranger Jenny and Ranger Tracy have created #FreeBabylon5 t-shirts and will be raising funds for two wonderful causes at the same time!

Tfund is a way of crowdfunding without a lot of complicated rewards. All you need to do is buy a T-shirt! If all 25 are sold of a particular color choice, that one will be made and sent to you. If not, your credit card won't be charged. Sounds great, right?

But wait! There's More! Profits from the shirts will be split evenly between Claudia Christian's C Three Foundation and Patricia Tallman's Be A Santa program.

But wait! There's More! You've got two choices of colors. What colors, you ask? What else but Drazi Green and Drazi Purple (or Drazi Purple and Drazi Green)! So choose your shirt and wear your color with pride! It would be a real shame if your favorite color didn't get made because you didn't buy a shirt, right?

The nitty-gritty: Only 25 shirts are available in each color so far. And there's only 21 days left to order and make sure your favorite color will be made!

ETA: Yikes! Forgot the links!

Letter sent to Syfy. I'm proudly waving the #FreeBabylon5 flag. Where else are we focusing our efforts?

Jan 09-03-2013 09:09 AM

I'd definitely send a letter to WB and let them know that we want it made available. And I was thinking the Science channel might be a good idea. I know they did Firefly a couple of times and somebody mention that they thought they'd shown Fringe, too.

And ANY contact info y'all find, please post it here!! We're working on a list to give people.

Also, we need a petition site that will send an email to WB with every person who clicks (not a compilation). Anybody know of a reputable petition site that won't farm for data and isn't mostly political?

Thanks!!

ItÆs only a suggestion based on personal observation over the years.

While the ôRangerö Tracy and ôRangerö Jenny type thing is fine within what might be considered the hardcore of the fan base. ThereÆs chance you might turn some people off the idea if continuing with it too much if this goes out into the wider world.

Most people who enjoy sci-fi donÆt like being called sci-fi fans because of the image it invokes in the minds of others û geeks dressing up and talking into communicators.

Nope. It was $4 for my order. I read on another site that doing it this way doesn't allow for combining ordering one of each so that's something to be aware of.

I wouldn't worry too much. I don't think anyone beyond the hardcore fans is going to even see the t-shirt thing. Me, I'm a 'covert' geek, except maybe my online persona, but I don't tend to flaunt it in my day to day life. Each to their own I guess, but we should just stay most focused on spreading the word.

On that topic, has anyone found a contact we can use for Netflix USA and UK? Perhaps make them aware of the campaign. In my strange little world, Netflix is more important than TV.

Just to make sure: I'm not saying I won't do anything at all :D. I already liked the Facebook-page, bought one of the t-shirts (even though postage was rather expensive with around $ 20), and plan on including #FreeBabylon5 in my forum signatures around the World Wide Web as soon as I find the time to do so. But when it comes to some sort of letter campain to SyFy etc., I don't really see myself participating.

Not meaning to put you on the spot, but can you tell why you resist that part? Even if we're able to make it really easy, like a few clicks and an email is sent? I'm sincerely interested in knowing.

It has nothing to do with how easy or how hard you make it. Hey, I'm one of the guys that back in the day took part in the REAL letter campaign concerning The Memory of Shadows, with those B5 bucks ;). I just wouldn't know how or what I should argue, given that I'm from Austria. What reason could I give why it is important for me personally that B5 is shown on TV in the US? And what would WB think if they'd check those letters/signatures/whatever and find out that while it's about broadcasting in the US, say half of them are from international fans? I actually think that it could hurt the campaign - like we're trying to trick them or something.

And while I MAY be willing to write WB, when it comes to wirting to channels (like SyFy) or streaming services directly, I really can't see why they should care when an Austrian guy wants them to show/stream the show in the US ;).

Jan 09-03-2013 03:05 PM

Thanks, that's helpful. And you make good points. For those of you non-USians, I was thinking of a letter to WB simply asking them to make B5 available for syndication re-runs and/or streaming and not mention any country at all. I agree that it might hurt if you tried to masquerade as being here in the states but I think it would be helpful for WB to learn how international the fanbase is.

Jan

My logic might be totally flawed here, but surely B5 is always available for re-runs / streaming providing a TV channel or streaming service is willing to pay for it?!

Have WB taken it 'off the shelf' so to speak? Am I wrong in thinking it's freely available to a willing buyer / network?

JoeD80 09-03-2013 06:34 PM

Not sure...for some reason Netflix and Hulu both stopped streaming it. But with the message on hulu being "go to thewb.com to watch this show" it seems a competitive move that WB was making to have people go use their streaming service instead. It's on VUDU, but you have to pay per episode so WB probably sees more of a direct profit there rather than being just another show among many streaming shows.

That's all just speculation by me though.

I have no idea how much the syndication package would actually cost for a channel like SyFy to pick it up; but Star Trek and all its spinoffs seem to get plenty of airplay. It seems like it probably wouldn't cost much to just throw in Babylon 5 as well.

You're welcome. Glad that I could help :). One thing that we may take from that is to make two campaigns, one for US-fans, and one for international "fivers". Just a suggestion.

Flight Of The Conchords, too. They even wore B5 / Crusade uniforms in one (possibly more?) episode(s). Maybe we could make several posters, or would that be overkill? What do you chaps and lasses think?

Also, a video-clip set to B5 music and showing how cool the series is, spanning Sinclair, Sheridan, Lochley, Gideon, and even David Martell, might be a good idea, too. If I remember, Dave Narn was particularly good at making those...

For the UK fans who want the t-shirts but the out-of country postage is too much. IF you've got Facebook:

Quote:

Ok, this is a call out to all the UK fans. If you want one of the purple or green #FreeBabylon5 t-shirts, drop me a message. I have found a supplier that is willing to do these for us. It will be ú10 + postage (I'll confirm postage tomorrow). The printer has agreed to waive the set-up fee as it is for charity. I need a minimum of 12 to go ahead, they will then all be printed and shipped.
Send a PM on Facebook to Nikki Mewha and she'll help out.

Also, there's a new site to make ordering the original shirts:

(right now it's 31 green and 35 purple)

No, not at all - at least not anything that Rangers Jenny and Tracy are doing. They're far more expensive and the profits won't go to Be A Santa or the C-Three Foundation.

I liked how many 5's they worked into the price on the Tfund shirts. Nice touch.
