Thanks, Dan.

Hey, do you know how to find out which cities will have the limited release showings? Not that I expect Orlando to be on that list but just in case...

Limited Release Cities for Changeling

Jan
The last four Clint Eastwood directed theatrical films, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, all opened in limited release. I would expect that Changeling would open in the same cities in limited release. If I can determine those cities, I will post that information here.

In lieu of that basis of forecasting the cities for limited release, I would expect that the Top 5 largest metropolitan areas (see 25 most populated metropolitan statistical areas) would be likely choices.

Metropolitan Area
1 New York├╗Northern New Jersey├╗Long Island
2 Los Angeles├╗Long Beach├╗Santa Ana
3 Chicago├╗Naperville├╗Joliet
4 Dallas├╗Fort Worth├╗Arlington
5 Philadelphia├╗Camden├╗Wilmington
6 Houston├╗Sugar Land├╗Baytown
7 Miami├╗Fort Lauderdale├╗Pompano Beach
8 Washington├╗Arlington├╗Alexandria
9 Atlanta├╗Sandy Springs├╗Marietta
10 Boston├╗Cambridge├╗Quincy
11 Detroit├╗Warren├╗Livonia
12 San Francisco├╗Oakland├╗Fremont
13 Phoenix├╗Mesa├╗Scottsdale
14 Riverside├╗San Bernardino├╗Ontario
15 Seattle├╗Tacoma├╗Bellevue
16 Minneapolis├╗St. Paul├╗Bloomington
17 San Diego├╗Carlsbad├╗San Marcos
18 St. Louis
19 Tampa├╗St. Petersburg├╗Clearwater
20 Baltimore├╗Towson
21 Denver├╗Aurora
22 Pittsburgh
23 Portland├╗Vancouver├╗Beaverton
24 Cincinnati├╗Middletown
25 Cleveland├╗Elyria├╗Mentor

In the UK the trailer for 'Changeling' has turned up in my email. So it is getting full marketing support.

The film has an '18' certificate - that is the new name for 'X' films. So if the trailer is correct either the nude scene is full frontal or something very nasty happens.

Andrew,
There is at least two "very nasty" things that happen in the film.
Young boys are abducted, molested, killed and dismembered. The murderer, Gordon Stewart Northcott is hanged in a very graphic scene.

Apparently, in the latest issue of Creative Screenwriting, JMS says that Changeling missed winning at Cannes by two votes, because two of the jurors couldn't believe the story was true. Anyone got the magazine?

Here's an excerpt from their website:

Quote:
How Changeling Changed J. Michael Straczynski

BY JASON DAVIS

├┤There├ćs a point where you almost know too much about something, and suddenly
you├ćre not sure how to tell the story,├ Straczynski says. In an effort to let the story
develop at its own pace, the writer put it aside and allowed himself to forget less essential events until he could bring into focus the portions of the story he wanted to tell. ├┤I see structure in my head,├ he explains. ├┤In this case, what I saw was two inverted triangles, where the first triangle, with the point up, is Collins├ć story. You start with her, and her story gets broader and broader and begins having impact from all kinds of places. The overlay on that was an upside down triangle with the base on top, which is the panorama of Los Angeles at that time├╣1928. And it begins getting narrower and narrower toward the bottom, bearing down on her. Once I could see that structure in my head, I knew how to write the story.├Â

For Straczynski, who had previously focused on science fiction work like Babylon 5
and the 1980s incarnation of The Twilight Zone, dramatizing a true story offered up a
greater sense of responsibility toward the material. ├┤Having come from a reporter background, I knew how to put together the facts and the timeline,├ he says. ├┤Because the case is so extraordinary, I didn├ćt want to overly fictionalize [it]. The moment you start taking a story as bizarre as this and adding fictional elements, you call the integrity of the whole thing into question.├ To maintain accuracy, Straczynski took dialogue from the court transcripts and other documents ├┤because you really can├ćt top what people said.├ Straczynski cites examples, such as the police captain instructing Collins to ├┤take [the imposter] home on a trial basis├ or a doctor├ćs statement that ├┤trauma can shrink the spine.├ ├┤You can├ćt make this stuff up,├ says Straczynski, who in an unusual move, included photocopies of the actual newspaper articles within the format of the screenplay to substantiate his story. A reader could digest a page, believe it impossible, and then be confronted with the exact quote in a newspaper
clipping on the next page. ├┤It was almost like writing a newspaper or a magazine
article in script form.├Â

I've seen the article. This is what JMS says about the award:

Quote:
The almost unbelievable facts behind the story would come to haunt the movie as it first unspooled before the public in France. Says Straczynski, "I found out afterward, through various and sundry sources, that we came within two votes of winning the Palme D'Or. If so Changeling would have been the first major Hollywood film to claim the festival's highest award since Miramax's Pulp Fiction in 1994, but Straczynski says it ran into a problem. "Those two people (on the jury) refused to believe that the story was real. They said that the police would never treat someone like this." As a result of this alleged incident, Universal and Eastwood asked Straczynski to annotate every part of the script with the supporting source material. "I had to pull out all my research and go through the script page by page and give them a line-by-line breakdown of all of the sources so they could then include that information for critics.
According to the article, the one aspect that there weren't a lot of material on is what happened to Christine
while she was in the mental institution.
so JMS had to base that on general research on what was common at the time.

We do not know
what happened to Christine Collins in the "psychopathic ward" (not only is the term used in Changeling, but appears in the Los Angeles Times). As a result, her encounter with Carol Dexter (Amy Ryan) is fiction, but probably very indicative of how the LAPD handled prostitutes at the time.

Christine Collins won a settlement against Capt. J. J. Jones for false imprisonment, but was not able to collect. The last mention of Christine Collins was a summary of J. J. Jones appeal of the award in 1935. Clint Eastwood mentioned in his interviews at Cannes that he was unable to find out what happened to Christine Collins. I have not been able to find any funeral notice for her in part because her name is so common.

The 46th New York Film Festival Has Begun!

The 46th New York Film Festival Has Begun!
Source: Edward Douglas September 26, 2008
Quote:
The 46th New York Film Festival is taking place in New York staring this weekend and running through October 12. As always, it creates a great opportunity for anyone in the New York area that hasn't been able to get to any of the other recent international film festivals a chance to see a lot of the big films in the Fall awards season before anyone else. Although ComingSoon.net has not been able to get to as many advance screenings as in years past, it looks like another great festival with more than usual returning alum and a couple very high profile movies making their New York debut months before their release.

There's one major and noticeable difference that's unique to this year's festival from the previous 45 years. With the Alice Tully Hall still under construction with heavy renovations, most of the festival's movies will be screened at the much larger Ziegfeld Theatre. The legendary movie theater holds 1,100 people, which means one can expect more tickets to be available right up until the day of the show, although one should check Filmlinc's Online Ticketing Site to see what's available. Ticket prices range from $16 to $40, depending on the section, with reserved seats available for the Ziegfeld and Alice Tully Hall shows....

Clint Eastwood's Changeling (Universal ├╗ Oct. 24) is the festival's prestigious Centerpiece. Starring Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich, it's a story set in 1928 Los Angeles, in which a single mother returns home to find her 10-year-old son missing. When the police finally find him in a nationwide manhunt, the boy seems changed and different in many ways that causes his mother more worry. It will play on October 4 and 5 at the Ziegfeld, preceded by the mother-and-son short film Wait for Me by Oscar winning documentary filmmaker Ross Kaufman (Born into Brothels)....

Jan,

I was able to find information on the limited release for Letters From Iwo Jima, Million Dollar Baby, and Mystic River. It looks like Changeling is following in the steps of Mystic River, so it is likely that after the North American premiere at the New York Film Festival that the limited release will be in Boston, Massachusetts and Los Angeles, California.

Of course, we can hope for Orlando and St. Louis.
