Forbidden Planet
I understand from a posting that the current Forbidden Planet is scrapped due to a leak on the Internet.
JMS - I'm 51 years old and my favorite movie of all time is Forbidden Planet. You don't know how much I want to see your version of this movie. I can't think of anyone better for the job and sorry that this had to happen, but hopefully everthing will work out. I remember when you were working on B5 back when I was working at a University. There were emails and post Arpanet and BBN. Those were some great times and loved B5! It is sure different now, people have to get stupid and ruin projects like this. Oh well.. patience.... |

Welcome, blackstripe05. Sorry to report that JMS doesn't post here and as far as we know, he doesn't read here either.
That said, I have good news. Yes, one draft of "Forbidden Planet" did get scrapped but JMS turned in the latest draft of his new version around the beginning of the year. Feel free to hang around and join the conversations or start new ones. Jan

Cinemablend Script Review: Forbidden Planet Could Be James Cameron's Next POSSIBLE SPOILERS By Josh Tyler: 2010-05-12 21:59:41 Dan Dassow Last edited by Jan; 05-14-2010 at 03:22 AM. |

There does seem to be a fair amount of the story in that, doesn't it? However, it also sounds a lot like what was said about the scrapped first pass on the film. Could be the article writer's putting on airs that he's got the script Cameron is considering.

From what I read of the review of the script there, I'm pretty excited. He took a little negative tone with parts of the review, but I think overall he hinted that there was a lot of very interesting movie there. I hope they keep his shell pretty in tact and are just having him do some rewrites.

Found on the moderated newsgroup in a thread discussing the Forbidden Planet Blue Ray that just came out:

Well that doesn't sound so good... hope they find another good director for the project. A Cameron-scifi-feature with more a deeper story and less popcorn would have been nice though.
Interesting thing is, in different news a few days ago I read that Cameron plans to transfer his funny "True Lies" concept into a TV series before concentrating on the next big budget movie again. So, what does that mean? Cameron just lost interest in Forbidden Planet? Something else going on behind the scenes? Would be a shame if the movie had to suffer because of these circumstances... |

Or ... that Cameron has decided he wants to concentrate on his own projects rather than directing someone else's movie. Avatar and True Lies are both Cameron projects. Forbidden Planet is just a directing gig.

Cameron is also working with Guillermo del Toro on his adaptation of H P Lovecraft's "At The Mountains Of Madness."

I just saw the Blu ray version of Forbidden Planet and it transfered well - you can even see Robby's cardboard legs as he is sitting at the pilots station in the last scene.
I got mine new for $6 + shipping from Amazon's list of new-used retailers. After today's viewing I got to thinking... JMS was just as inspired by Forbidden Planet as Gene Roddenberry. Even JJ Abraham's in his Trek movie made Uhura a Phonologist like Morbius. And although Roddenberry, being ahead of his time, couldn't be as cerebral with his version, he still borrowed plenty. This may be a stretch but I'm thinking JMS on the other hand was able to more fully embrace the Shakespearian theme and possibly define his epic war of order vs. chaos - as Morbius discovered with his inner struggle of good and evil. Now with talk of an eventual Forbidden Planet remake and and trend for prequels and alternate universes (Trek 2.0), is it possible the Bellerphon had missed the 'No Trespassing' warnings and landed on Altar-4, the abandoned Krell (Vorlon) home-world? Morbius had discovered at the time of their disappearance Krell (Vorlon) had devoted all their resources to one goal and he warned that mankind was yet unfit to receive such knowledge. He eventually found his own warning to be true. Not saying this will be the rewrite, but it would help define the Krell in a pretty cool alternate universe prequel.
