Even the hardcore Babylon 5 fans are probably raising their eyebrows and pointing and saying "dork" at this one. But does anyone on here play? I've gotten back into it after not really playing since...jeez, 10 years ago? And I must say, it's a really fun game. A lot of thought and effort required to be good at it though, hard to do casually. And if anyone used to play but doesn't anymore...give me your cards

AAAAAAAARRRGGHHH! Don't get me started on the Magic - WotC misery...

I really liked to play about twelve years ago when the 4th edition was almost brand new. Then WotC started to spill new expansions and editions in intervals some people don't even change their underware, for pure money making purposes. That was when I stopped. Never touched any deck eversince.
I thought about selling the cards, but since there are more than enough other folks fed up with this (inluding all my friends) and selling their's too it's hardly worth the effort to even try.

Haha..yeah the rate of expansions are pretty darn ridiculous now. However, you really don't need all that many cards so it's not too difficult to keep up if you still play older stuff.

Similar story here, got into it around 93/4 big time with my mates, we played it solid (and I mean solid, it was almost like gaming crack!), around the end of 96 (Alliances was a big turning point I remember) I'd seriously had enough of the stupid rate of expansion release and gave up in 97...

Still tempted to pick up one of those two made up decks packs for old time sake but have to resist. I earn a great deal more money now (not have much money really kept the habit in check!!) and it'd get idiotic pretty damn fast and I reckon the girlfriend would leave!

I think I bailed out shortly after the Visions set was released. I only ever played a couple of times, so it became an issue of me spending more money than enjoyment I got out of it all. I remember my very first purchase: a revised edition starter deck. I was a big X-Men comic collector then, and I got mail order catalogs for buying of comics that included pages dedicated to MTG and I found myself intrigued by the pictures of some of the cards they used to help promote sales and eventually caved in and went to a store on the mall and bought myself a deck. I didn't know squat about how to play the game, so I didn't know a single starter deck by itself wouldn't be all that useful for playing -- it really is/was quite a cost intensive game. But I ended up enthused when I opened that first starter deck and shuffled through the cards looking at what all I got because there amongst the throng was one card that I knew of before buying that deck because it was used to show off for sales in that catalog I mentioned above: the Shivan Dragon. When a guy at school with whom I played the few games I ever played learned that I had a Shivan Dragon, he tried to get me to trade it to him. I think he offered me like a stack of 12 of his cards for it, but I refused. It was just too fun having gotten a Shivan Dragon in my very first MTG purchase to ever give that sucker away.

oh i play, and i live in new york, where the WORLD CHAMPS is going on RIGHT NOW at the jacob javits center, and i work in retail so of course I CAN"T BLOODY GO!

haven't had a chance since 97, oh well, maybe next time.

right now i play mainly type 2(standard) currently a good RDW(red deck wins) with some minor green, i draft a decent amount, i'll play extended, legacy and my love type 1(classic) when i have the chance, if you are any good and don' have to buy a ton of packs(some are extremely addicted) you can keep up without spending too much, and if you get better you don't actively spend money on it, win tornies build up store credit, go to the set release every 3 months (good times, i'll be your judge at any pre-release events at neutral ground).

as to the game it self, its chess and ad&d, very complex, always changing. it teaches tactics, and good basic math, manual dexterity and has a very large worldwide following.

When I quit the first time it was also around Visions, vacant. I got back in with Time Spiral which came out last year and did a lot of stuff that referenced old cards, so it appealed to people like us who would have played back then. If any of you people don't want your old cards...feel free send my way lol.


Lunan: I mostly play type 2 as well, since i don't have any old cards really. I'm not sure I agree with you that you don't have to spend much . It seems like to get started and really get competitve quickly it's a close to thousand dollar investment. However, if you do it slowly and draft like that ,you're probably right.

My decks I run are UB Faeries and UW Blink. (For those who don't know U is the sorta jargon message board for blue, B = black, W= white. Faeries is a type of creature, and blink is a card that removes stuff from the game then brings them right back.). They work pretty darn well too. I'd play you if you weren't all the way across the country.
