the save stargate universe campaign put together a book and, funded by sales sent it directly to several Netflix eceutives, perhaps we could try something similar?

Impressive and very interesting fan campaign. The book is basically an elaborate essay on why the show didn't succeed, examining the viewing figures that weren't captured by traditional ratings systems and why it would be well suited to a Netflix revival. (Much like the recent season of Arrested Development).

I'm unsure if a Netflix exec would realistically have time to sit down and read it, but an assistant might. It will at the very least mean it registers on their radar as a show that fans want back.

As for this kind of thing in relation to #FreeBabylon5, I still think we're best relying on letters and critical mass / fan demand. Netflix had B5 on their streaming catalogue before, so it's all about convincing them that it's worth acquiring again.

I'm still not 100% clear on why it was pulled in the first place, but I imagine it had to do with cost vs. viewing figures. WB may, or may not have had a hand in that.

No way of really knowing but given that WB has the show available for streaming at a cost-per-episode (with a small discount if the entire season is purchased), my feeling is that's the reason. Even with smaller numbers of episodes bought using that model, I wouldn't be surprised if they still make more money that way than they did via Netflix/Hulu. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way of finding out.

Apparently on a Warner Archives podcast recently, a WB exec said:

Quote:
“Babylon 5 is an extraordinarily important franchise to all of Warner Brothers. So much so that it is of course very much on the minds at everybody at Warner home video, and bringing Babylon 5 to a next generation shall we say, is very much on the minds of everyone involved. The fact that the show was post produced on video tape and FX were done on video tape makes bringing another iteration a very expensive proposition. But it is being discussed in the highest of quarters.”

Audience (?): So are like you saying there might be a blue shift in the stars.

“There might be hope, but there is nothing to report that’s a fact. Lets just say that the powers that be are very smart and they know the fan desire is out there.”
This is from this post as I haven't had time to listen to the podcast myself.

Upon being asked about it on his Facebook fan page, JMS replied:

As before, I think the best way to encourage more and productive discussion is to keep increasing the fan base. #FreeBabylon5!

BTW, all packages have been mailed to those who've donated/ordered #FreeBabylon5 stuff. Also, don't forget that there's only a few days left to order the gorgeous B5-20 book and have $10 of your purchase go toward the campaign! http://www.cafepress.com/b5books

Next item on the agenda will be the Thunderclap campaign!

Here is one case where I hope JMS is wrong. Babylon 5 on bluray would be a "dream given form" to me. It's goal: to bring high quality TV to the masses in an equally high quality format.

Oh I really had my hopes up there for a moment,
Carl

It would be a wonderful thing to see! Just the fact that it's being discussed is positive. If B5 is on the radar again for WB, that has to be a good thing. #FreeBabylon5 will no doubt be helping!

Is that hinting that there might be a way to get something from the tapes for a Blu-Ray release that isn't what we got with the DVDs?

This link echos the earlier HD conversion's comments and contrasts it to the challenges of similar HD conversion project - Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I've just submitted the Thunderclap campaign for approval. I'm going to keep it open for people to join in until Jan. 15 so that folks going to the Space City Con and only finding out about #FreeBabylon5 will be able to join in.

As a reminder, this was a suggestion Sandra made a while back. For more information, check out https://www.thunderclap.it/
