Nov 2 is so far away!
My first impressions: 1. The artist (penciller/inker) is really good. Very detailed. 2. Story, can't get much from this so far. But, it's a preview. It looks like JMS though. 3. The colors are REALLY bland on one level, and then on another, the shading is both over exposed in terms of lighting, and overcasts shadows. It bothers me. Maybe it's just me though.

I've given this some thought and I'm going to buy a copy when it comes out. The reason why I wasn't a "ZOMG I have to gets this now!" was I'm just not into Superman. Now, when I was a kid, I did try reading some Superman comics after I saw the movie on VHS. However, I was just lost as to what was going on. Then I found out that there was 50 years of backstory, but then there wasn't because of the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Then he died, but then came back, and got electric, and so on...
I do like the stand-alone stories though. Superman: For All Seasons? Good stuff. Kingdom Come? Still enjoyable, though my trade is starting to fall apart due to many reads. Superman: Red Son? Interesting story, though I don't understand why Supes landing in the USSR means that Bruce Wayne is there as well instead of Gotham. All-Star Superman? One of the best comics I've ever read. And since I have several of JMS' comics in my library (although I have none of his stuff that was part of Marvel's annual-crossover-thons), I don't think I'll be disappointed. And Smile, the colors remind me of some of the games I've played on my 360.

Back Page feature for an ARC
This week's DC comics has a picture of an Advance Reading Copy of Superman: Earth One. If you know anyone who gets ARCs of graphic novels, might be good to check into it. (or see if one pops up on Ebay).

One of the jobs I was given by Captain Jaclyn back when I was new to the Team was to find the most common misspellings of JMS' name:
Stracynski Strazynski Straczinski Staczynski Strazinski Straczysky Straczyski By the time I finished I was surprized that I could spell it correctly anymore! Jan

At least JMS' last name is pronounced similar to the way it's spelled.

From the other end of the spectrum, a negative review:
http://comics.ign.com/articles/112/1129376p1.html Dunno, haven't read it yet but I'd rather believe the positive review. Dan seems to be complaining that JMS didn't write the story the way he would've written it, that is, exactly the way Superman has been written before. He acknowledges the book is a reboot, but then complains about every detail that is different from the traditional Superman. A phrase from the previous review comes to mind: "Comic fans are impossible to please; we bitch in clear choruses that things are becoming stale, yet turn into rabid dogs when a writer breaks from a character’s norm." He seems to hate the fact Superman doesn't start out with an "unflappable moral fortitude". He claims making Superman imperfect, "strips all the humanity out of Superman". Eh? He doesn't seem to get this is a story of how Clark BECOMES Superman. How many people start out perfect, already fully formed as the person they will become? That's not much of an origin story to me, if Superman is exactly the same in the beginning as he is in the end. |
