Superman: Earth One is a good book. It's not a great book, but the story is well done enough that it shouldn't matter. I read the whole thing in one shot, and it's a really good book to give a new reader who might be interested in Superman. That said, it's very traditional. There's no real new ground being broken here, which is probably intended, given the scope of the project, and their desire to use this new format to gain new readers.

Story: 3.5 / Art: 4 / Overall: 3.5 (Out of 5)

I started this book with the personal caveat that it was not a Superman story. That it was something that employed the trappings of Superman, the mythos, without using that same tone or mood. That way I could try and enjoy the experience. I was wrong though. This really is a Superman story. It just takes a little while to get there. It's maybe what Smallville ought to be.

It's not unfair to say that Superman: Earth One is a flawed work, particularly since there are so many other recent origins for the Man of Steel (including Superman: Secret Origin or, my personal favorite, Superman: Birthright) that have had more solidity to their central premise. But as far as uncomplicated popcorn entertainment — and perhaps more importantly, something unencumbered by continuity or sci-fi weirdness that might scare off new readers — this is certainly a stylishly-drawn calling card to hook people into more of Superman's adventures.

On the whole, it's a nice start. It's weighed down by the need to re-spin the origin tale ... The good news is that when the plot kicks in, it's an entertaining and nail-biting piece of work.

This is the book that they need to get out of the way to start getting to the good stuff, I think. Like most superhero movies, it gets too bogged down on the origin story, hiding what could be its strongest assets for later editions, should the series be so lucky.

There's lots of talk how pretty much all comic shops sold out of their copies within a few days and about the possible speculation market over at Bleeding Cool (including some notes about UK comic shops that did get it and one that may still have some buried in the comments).

In checking online status at Barnes & Noble (still taking pre-orders with the Nov 2nd release day), it may still be gettable online there or in stores. Borders.com appears to only be selling it online and not in the stores although that could change tomorrow when it is officially released to the non-direct market.

In any case, it looks like it did even better than DC hoped. The only problem I see now is they don't have any follow ups anywhere close to being released. The only other announced one in the line, Batman: Earth One, does not have a release date (sometime in 2011).

Here are some posts from JMS' Fan Facebook page last night:

Back online after a) loss of internet and b) being hit by a virus disguised as a Norton update. Good news: the Superman GN sold out of most comic stores the night it came out, Amazon sold out in 24 hours, and after ordering a second print run of 20,000 I heard there's going to be another print order which is just stun...ningly huge. The book is a massive success, and they want to fast-track the next volume.

The great part about the book being an unadulterated sales hit is that it proves Dan DiDio was right, that this may very well become the model or prototype for a good chunk of DC's publishing future. Which again is why they indicated to me as soon as the book hit big that they want to get the next one going at once to capitalize on the success of volume one...and that may require some hard choices on my part.

That's what's being discussed now, so we'll see where it all lands.

I've been wondering that last, myself. Originally they were talking about two per year but it wasn't clear whether one would be Superman: Earth One and the other Batman: Earth one or two of each. Some articles I read with the JMS release only talked one per year. I'd love to see two of these by JMS per year but it seems almost impossible from an art standpoint even if I assume that JMS would write it faster than the proverbial speeding bullet.
