Not me, I'm more excited than ever. #4 is my favorite.

#3 is my favorite. The others lack context / will feel more epic in the episode itself. Thanks for these.

Another 3.5/5 review, in Portuguese: http://www.adorocinema.com/noticias/...oticia-126349/

Also there's no notable time jump as speculated above, according to the review, the episode covers from July to December, starting almost exactly where S1 left (which ended a bit after July 4).

(Translation: )

Quote:
It may seem odd, but the Christmas special does not just show the end of the year. Starting roughly from the same end point of the first season, the script covers a period of six long months. From July to December, we accompany the protagonists to celebrate their birthday; Celebrate Christmas alongside family members as they face tough choices and kick off their New Year. We note here the lightness of the creative Lana Wachowski in balancing the complicity between the eight characters in joint scenes with the circumstances that affect each particular form.

New review: http://uproxx.com/sepinwall/sense8-a...etflix-review/

It criticizes several aspects, but ultimately it is positive.

Quote:
It's nice to be able to reconnect with people you like at holiday time, whether it’s through a psychic link, a private chat room, or streaming an endearingly imperfect show that wants to be everything at once, and succeeds at far more than it has any business doing.

Feliz navidad, Sense8. I look forward to reuniting again in the spring.
And an interesting detail:

Quote:
Since the special (which debuts tomorrow) just continues the story from the end of season 1 and sets things up for other season 2 episodes, the Netflix interface will wisely just consider it part of the second season, rather than treating it as a standalone program, like the BoJack Horseman Christmas special.
edit Oh also: "Onwumere gets his own meta introduction".

edit https://omelete.uol.com.br/series-tv...as/?key=119781

(Translation: )

Quote:
To live experiences is to share with the other. To deny the interlocutor is to halt the chance of evolution, of change. Every time you put yourself in somebody's place, get out of it with a piece of that person and leave a piece of yours with it. Not surprisingly Sense8 suffer some rejection ... We live in an era of estrangement, where people connect with others are called "special" of "different", where they are located as transgressive. And all this in a fiction that opens the truth: we want more and more to mock and less and less to feel.
4/5 (Great)

And yet another CCXP interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rKuRxTclEI

A lot more re-writing on the set by Lana, than the previous year. Also the whole where are you Hernando, I lost my flip flop montage in S1, was a last minute rewrite.

New review: https://www.pastemagazine.com/articl...hy-and-th.html

It's messy (he finds the entire show messy), but he definitely enjoyed it.

Quote:
Coupled with the silent, spectral presence of the sensates' "mother," Angelica (Daryl Hannah, veering dangerously close to Kate McKinnon-could-lampoon-this-on-SNL territory), it’s tempting to write off the Christmas special, and perhaps the entire series, as another sci-fi misfire from creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski.

And yet, my advice is straightforward: Don’t. For all the flaws in its construction, Sense8’s Christmas special distills the series’ courageous gambit into a handful of sublime sequences, three or four of which—despite being utterly indulgent—left me grinning from ear to ear. [...]

The series’ messy, must-see special is unlikely to become a Christmas perennial, but in this year, of all years, its message is the perfect fit.
The review has several mini spoilers here and there (eg lines that characters say), so take that into account before you read it.

edit http://www.mymbuzz.com/2016/12/22/se...r-free-review/

3/5

Quote:
Overall, it’s an enjoyable enough Christmas gift for fans who want to spend a little more time over the hols in the company of their favourite characters, but there’s not much except a lot of stuffing for the uninitiated.
It says it's a spoiler free review, but it breaks down so many stuff that are in it that I don't recommend reading it, if you are avoiding spoilers (or want to know only a few things).

A common comment found in several reviews is that by and large the episode is not set around Christmas, so it's not much of a "Christmas Special". (More like a celebrations special.) And as such it's really not as standalone as the name implies. It's literally the first 2 episodes of Season 2, it's not a separate thing.

edit Another from Brazil: http://mundoestranho.abril.com.br/bl...-sem-spoilers/

Positive. Lana has a cameo?

Just started watching now!

The opening underwater scene was brilliant, brought back down to earth with a bump with some very corny dialogue between Amanita and Agent Bendix (or should I say Agent Smith?!! Hahaha). Does any law enforcement official talk like that? Really?

Still, I'm definitely enjoying myself! Cool to have the show back.

Just watched the Special.
I love it, it is packed.

I need a re-watch before I talk about it on the Sense8 Podcast in a few days.

Completely spoiler free notes about the credits / production:

- Lana and Tom Tykwer cameo I believe.
- Some new producers / EPs added, some old removed.
- John Toll added as EP.
- One editor left, a new one was added.
- "The Wachowskis" credit only about who created it ("& J. Michael Straczynski" of course), everything else credits Lana solely (with JMS where applicable), no Lilly.
- Anarchos Productions (the Wachowskis' production company) removed from credits, Studio JMS remains, 1 more production company removed, 2 new added
- "Sountrack album on WB WaterTower Music" What??? When is this getting announced??
- David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon are credited as "Consultants"

Complete list of shooting locations in the credits:

Quote:
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Argyll, Scotland
Berlin, Germany
Chicago, Illinois
Chippenham, England
London, England
Los Angeles, California
Malta
Mexico D.F., Mexico

A far less favorable review:

http://www.vulture.com/2016/12/sense...pisode-13.html

Pretty much lost me with the opening of the second paragraph:
Quote:
You'd think that the makers of Sense8, a compulsively watchable, hippy-dippy, sci-fi show ...
...and I almost did a Sun on my monitor with:

Quote:
These characters simply don't earn their happiness,
Like, who does (or has to) *earn* happiness?!?

My only real complaint on just one watching is that I don't think a good job was done showing how much time had passed. One minute it seemed to pick up the day after season one with Jela and Capheus still pulling bullets out of the bus and the next it was long enough that Kala's been married long enough that the wedding not being consummated is something that was enough concern for Rajan to consult Kala's mother.

Must watch again...

Jan

Another review: http://www.avclub.com/tvclub/sense8s...-sense8-247727

B+

Quote:
I’m glad to see Sense8 is back, and even more delighted to see how uncompromisingly it’s leaned what made its first season so special (for better and worse). The “Christmas Special” probably won’t change anyone’s minds about the show, but that’s okay. It’ll be our little secret.
Not really a review: http://screenertv.com/television/sen...-kala-married/

As for me, like a bunch of the reviews rated it 3/5, I think that's how I would rate it too. It was okay, but I can't say I enjoyed it as much I thought I would. That might partially be because to me it felt like it was 3(! yes, not 2! 3!!) episodes sandwiched together, and that many montages in a single episode didn't sit well with me. I'll watch it again (and again.. and again..) of course, so maybe I'll like it better next time. Also I don't really worry about the rest of the season, this episode had to cover many months and so on, I think the rest of the episodes will not be this packed.

Finally I think in the end their solution to the New Years Eve celebration in Berlin featuring Aml Ameen was to cut it out entirely and just have Wolfgang and Felix celebrate? I have to watch it again, because it's all a blur right now, but I don't think I saw the other Sensates there, but in the very end.

edit http://www.vox.com/culture/2016/12/2...review-netflix

4/5

Quote:
What I do know is that Sense8 feels almost like a daring statement of purpose from Netflix, from the Wachowskis, and from co-creator J. Michael Straczynski. In 2016, a year that seemed intent on declaring that we’ve all been living in hermetically sealed cocoons and don’t understand each other at all, Sense8 says there’s nothing so great that can’t be overcome by stepping back and taking the time to consider someone else’s perspective. The true revolution comes not with bloodshed but with talking and laughing and techno music, and if you must find salvation, better to do it with close friends, amid the snow.
edit Hm, looks like the reason "Anarchos Productions" is no longer credited is that Lana and her wife have created their own production company, separate from Lilly. In the credits "Venus Castina Productions" is credited first, in place of Anarchos, and if you look it up: https://www.bizapedia.com/il/venus-c...tions-llc.html

Quote:
The company has 2 principals on record. The principals are Wachowski, Karin Winslow from Chicago IL and Lana Wachowski from Chicago IL.

Filing Date: September 2, 2015
Company Age: 1 Year 3 Months
And if you look up what it means:

Quote:
Venus Castina ('Chaste Venus') from Latin castus, is claimed to be an epithet of the Roman goddess Venus; in this form, she was supposedly associated with "the yearnings of feminine souls locked up in male bodies".
Wow, how appropriate!

edit
https://www.bustle.com/p/the-sense8-...-to-2016-25926

Quote:
And even as I shook my head at some of the schmaltzier dialogue, I appreciated its bold positivity. The Sense8 Christmas special is exactly what I needed to watch right now.
http://ew.com/recap/sense8-a-christmas-special/

B

edit Checked the credits again, Pantoliano went uncredited again.

edit http://screenrant.com/sense8-christm...owski-neftlix/

Quote:
Perhaps that will also help justify the enjoyably odd shifts, clunky comedy, and sometimes-syrupy dialogue that are as much a part of what makes Sense8 so special as its ambitious structure. The show wears its heart and its shortcomings on its sleeve. That kind of vulnerability and lack of cynicism doesn’t come around often, much less on the scale of something like this. With Sense8, the Lana and Lilly Wachowski may not reach the pop cultural heights they did with The Matrix, but with this sincere, imperfect show, they clearly have other goals in mind.
