Soulhunters

Hi

So I am going back all the way through B5, starting with "The Gathering", and yesterday I just watched the soulhunters eppy. It made me wonder where the soulhunters came from?

Were they a race that was just naturally born with this ability or were they created like the telepaths and the technomages?

First ones must know of their existance but never thought of them as being created by them. I always thought of the Soulhunters as an evolutionary step to ôFirst Onesö. They live for tens of thousands of years, (read somewhere, but don't know how canon it is) that their ships are partially organic and provides for all their needs. Then thereÆs the sensing death thing.

Lorien was designed to look similar to the Soul Hunters. It was the second Soul Hunter in the episode that said he was 4000 years old but that was considered young.

edit: oh actually it was Martin Sheen's Soul Hunter character in River of Souls who said that. Delenn does say in "Soul Hunter" that they are immortal though.

I would have liked more information on them. Perhaps a book trilogy, or even just one book giving us an inside look into their lives would have been fun.

There was another Lorien/Soul Hunter connection too. The Soul Hunter who tries to take Delenn's soul says he'll be there to catch Delenn when she falls; Lorien says he caught Sheridan before when Sheridan asks if Lorien will catch him.

Mark Sheppard on sci-fi, acting, and more

Mark Sheppard is well known to sci-fi fans for his many guest spots on science-fiction and fantasy shows, so when his name was included in the lineup for the recent Armageddon Expo in Auckland, I was legitimately excited: the guy played one of my favourite minor characters in Battlestar Galactica (Gaius Baltar's quirky lawyer, Romo Lampkin), guest-starred in the latest season opener of Doctor Who as Canton Delaware III, and is enjoying success as demon Crowley in the latest series of Supernatural. ...

I ask if the work of the actor is simply to try and find the honesty or humanity in the role, whether the character is human or not.

"Absolutely," Sheppard agrees. "My dad [Morgan Sheppard] has a famous story - that's why the Soul Hunter in Babylon 5 for him was such an interesting role, and why [creator J. Michael] Straczynski gave it to him, because it's the humanity in that that's more important than the prosthetics or the ability for him to be an alien." ...

Maybe they are the degraded remains of Lorien's race. I mean that rather than evolving further they retrograded, got less advanced but specialised in this way. They mentioned they were an "order" maybe they became that way from this activity, no longer First Ones, but a much older group. I'd love a book about them too! B5 is such a great story but it has lots of these little side things going on that are really good in of themselves.

"Because you won't tell yourself about it?"
