I don't think that takes away that the authorial voice can come through both in the dialog and the plot, even if it is expressed through other people. Certainly the written word (in novels or short stories) are the purest that a writer's voice can come through, but I'd be uncomfortable qualifying the more collaborative narrative artforms as somehow lesser (I don't get the sense you're necessarily doing that though).

So? You made the claim that wordcount equals quality, or at least that longer texts require more attention and artistry. This is patently absurd, because conciseness is in fact quite hard - as demonstrated by poetry. Thus one could easily argue that comics require a great deal more skill and editorial oversight, being in fact much closer in form to a type of illustrated poetry than to the novel.

Alternatively, you could draw a comparison to short stories, a form of prose where a very similar logic applies. Or do you think short stories are easy to write?

This whole thread is, by the way, a good illustration of the above point: the more you write, the more people pick on it.
No, this thread is a demonstration of the fact that unsubstantiated claims made with no knowledge of the subject matter are hard to defend.

That's it, I'm out of here. If you're comparing comics to illustrated poetry, this thread has reached its peak of ridiculousness. Good luck "reading" strips about amazing giant mutants and sentient tin cans.

I absolutely love how you managed to drag something out of context just by removing the beginning of the sentence and the previous sentence. Well done !

Comic and novel are different.
Do you prefer red or blue ? I prefer red because red is more red than blue and blue is less red than red. See the point ? hmmmm

Could we focus on the thread subject or are we going to argue on something totally irrelevant during all day ?
Or you can continue, no problem for me, but in another thread, PLEASE !

Okay, anybody who wants to continue the above discussion can take it to a different thread. In fact, when I've got time I'll probably do so.

Just got back from the convention center. JMS' panel was AMAZING!

Before it started, some young men laid down some wooden panels.

First we saw a sizzle reel that was beautiful, exciting and captured JMS' work past, present and future. My computer is horribly slow but it looks like it's been posted now at StudioJMS.com Twitter account is @studio_jms and facebook is StudioJMS

This is a dream come true for JMS (and lots of his fans!!!) and he's partnered with Patricial Tallman to bring all of his projects under one 'roof'. He reviewed several of them, including the web series, "Adventures of Apocalypse Al", The feature film "The Flickering Light", "Living Dead: The Musical", comics "Ten Grand" and "Sidekick", "Falling Angel" and "Guardians" and I believe a couple more. I'll have to listen to the recording.

When he mentioned "Living Dead: The Musical" the screen showed some of the Riverdancers and out came a troupe of Zombie Dancers who gave a brief show. As JMS said, we saw something we'd NEVER seen before.

After the presentation he took questions, running around the room with the mike and teasing and joking. It was a WONderful time.

In the autograph line shortly thereafter, there was a small camera crew interviewing folks waiting or after they'd gotten their items signed, asking about what B5 meant to us. Smile of the Shadow and I were both interviewed.

Something's gone wrong with my camera (most likely operator error) and all of the amazing pics I got have that stupid focusing square. My friend Samantha filmed JMS' panel on my Flip so we'll see how that worked out.

Gotta head out for inner now. Hope this is enough for a start.

Jan

That's awesome news, I hope Studio JMS becomes the next DreamWorks!

'The Flickering LIght' film project is most interesting and one that I'll look forward to it's release

Leni Reifenstahl's name came up a few times as I was doing research for a Starship Troopers podcast.

Perhaps best known for her Nazi propaganda film 'Triumph of the Will' Riefenstahlr's unique documentary style of film making later influenced modern film makers. George Lucas/Star Wars, Paul Verhoeven/Starship Troopers, Franklin J. Schaffner/Patton.

In her 2003 obituary, the Independent wrote:
Opinions will be divided between those who see her as a young, talented and ambitious woman caught up in the tide of events which she did not fully understand, and those who believe her to be a cold and opportunist propagandist and a Nazi by association.

The Independent also offered
At the end of her long life she was still the controversial femme fatale of German films...She was interested in beauty, adventure and films, but she was famous for being the woman you love to hate.

I haven't been giddy over anything in a good long while. Watching that video made me feel quite giddy. I look forward to many of the projects that have been announced and look forward to the ones in the future.

More pictures!! These are some of the posters and postcards that the Zombie Dance Troupe (whose actual name I'll need to get from the recording) were giving out as people exited the JMS/Studio JMS panel:

If Living Dead: the Musical hits the road, I hope it comes to Memphis. We have hosted many Broadway musicals. Plus, it'd be the second musical I'd want to see (Spamalot was the first), but the first I'd hopefully attend. As long as my schedule doesn't change again.

BTW, my friend Samantha did record the Spotlight/Announcement panel on my little Flip video camera. Internet here at the hotel is really spotty and very slow but I hope to be able to figure out how to get it up on YouTube once I get home.

I told you the sizzle reel was really cool, right? One of the cool things that fans will appreciate is that the end shot is from 'Sleeping in Light'. Only this time JMS is flipping the power switch UP, bringing Studio JMS online.

The thing is, he is very descriptive in what he wants from the artist; details panel-by-panel exactly what is happening. It's still his narrative. Not every comic-writer does it the same way, but that's his style.
