Compuserve Forums are shutting down

Now this is true blast from the past. I just read that Oath, the Verizon owned company that was once AOL is shutting down the Compuserve forums. I didn't realize they were still active.

For those that are too young to remember, Compuserve was an early (think 1980s- early 90s) online network that had forums on all sorts of topics, including SciFi where a lot of discussions. It was not the Internet as the Internet as we know it had yet to be created.

Many of us here and JMS as well, were on Compuserve or CIS as it was commonly known back in the day. I was an active member of many forums and SciFi run by one Lee Whiteside and other sysops was a great resource and where i first heard about this upcoming series called Babylon 5.

CIS was something like $5.00/hr for dialup access via modem and many of us used automated programs such as TapCIS to download new topics and discussion threads and respond off line then upload and download threads later.

I was lucky enough to have sponsored accounts through the various magazines i wrote for that I never had to pay for access. Some of my posts to Joe in the compuserve forum are likely archived up here.

Wow such a sad thing to hear about even though I stopped using them back in the 90s when AOL bought Compuserve and all but killed it.

Yeah. The shutdown is very sad news!
I was there in the mid 90ies too.

Take a look at the "CIS SF"-Forum.
Let me confirm that the people there are cute people alike the jmsnews people:
