Message from JMS:
[quote]J. Michael Straczynski - Hang with JMS

We are now exactly 3 months from publication of my new novel THE GLASS BOX. Fun fact: if everyone on this feed pre-ordered a copy, it would debut on the NY Times Best-Seller List. I think that would be lovely. Shall we make some noise?

From the  listing:
THE GLASS BOX is a hard-hitting, fast-paced sci-fi novel about the choices we make and the ramifications we face.

Acclaimed creator @becomingsupermanjms takes readers on a mesmerizing journey inspired by pressing contemporary issues, including our right to protest and the threats designed to undermine that right. Told with drama and heart, THE GLASS BOX is a moving story that features a colorful and often eccentric cast of characters readers will fall in love with.

Babylon 5 Secret Project to be Announced

Posted on 4/26/2023 by Jan Schroeder in News

JMS has been hinting at a new B5 project that's not the re-imagining/reboot (which is currently on hold pending a possible Writer's strike) that's been in the works for some time and is fully completed.   Originally he expected to be able to announce it at San Diego Comic-Con but as of last week, it appears that the unveiling may come on or about May 3.

This morning, JMS posted this tantalizing image:

New B5 Pilot Remains In Development

Posted on 2/3/2022 by Jan Schroeder in News

News from JMS.  It's not what we'd hoped, but not all bad.----
----------
Today, about an hour ago, Deadline Hollywood announced the slate of pilot scripts being picked up for production by The CW. Babylon 5 was not on that list.

When a pilot script is not picked up to production, 99.999% of the time, that’s the end of the road for the project, the script is dead.

However: shortly before that piece was published, I received a call from Mark Pedowitz, President of The CW. (I should mention that Mark is a great guy and a long-time fan of B5. He worked for Warners when the show was first airing, and always made sure we got him copies of the episodes before they aired because he didn’t want to wait to see what happened next.)

Calling the pilot “a damned fine script,” he said he was taking the highly unusual step of rolling the project and the pilot script into next year, keeping B5 in active development while the dust settles on the sale of the CW.

Here’s the bottom line:
Yesterday, Babylon 5 was in active development at the CW and Warner Bros. for fall 2022.

Today, Babylon 5 is in active development at the CW and Warner Bros. for fall 2023

New Babylon 5 Reboot in Development for the CW

Posted on 9/27/2021 by Jan Schroeder in News

Several trade publications report a new Babylon 5 series in development.  From Variety:

"Original series creator J. Michael Straczynski is onboard to write the project. He will also executive producer under his Studio JMS banner. Warner Bros. Television, which produced the original series, will produce the reboot.

The new iteration of the sci-fi series is described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot.” In the series, John Sheridan, an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last, best hope for the survival of the human race.

THE LAST DANGEROUS VISIONS is now finished, 112,000 words by some of the most visionary writers of the last 48 years, right to the present moment. Proud and utterly exhausted from all that went into this.

JMS Now Has a Patreon Account

Posted on 5/18/2020 by Jan in News

Exciting News!!  JMS has opened a Patreon account and we're all invited.

The idea is for fans to be able to participate in the creative process by their patronage and have a say in new projects JMS might do through his Synthetic Worlds company.

There are different tiers and perks for each.  Right off, JMS has made available to all patrons the script for his City of Dreams audio drama, "The Damned Are Playing at Godzilla's Tonight".   Another perk was a behind the scenes memo from Sense8 that JMS wrote as though it were an internal memo by a BPO scientist.  Last night was the first chat with JMS on the Discord server.

Check out:  Patreon: J. Michael Straczynskifor more information.  If enough fans of JMS' work sign on, there could be some really exciting projects done.

More Details About JMS' Autobiography

Posted on 9/29/2018 by Jan in News

JMS has tweeted that although this item only shows the E-book, the harcover will also be released on July 23.

https://www.harpervoyagerbooks.com/book/9780062857859/becoming-superman/

In this dazzling memoir, the acclaimed writer behind Babylon 5, Sense8, Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and Marvel’s Thor reveals how the power of creativity and imagination enabled him to overcome the horrors of his youth and a dysfunctional family haunted by madness, murder and a terrible secret.

For four decades, J. Michael Straczynski has been one of the most successful writers in Hollywood, one of the few to forge multiple careers in movies, television and comics. Yet there’s one story he’s never told before: his own.

Joe's early life nearly defies belief. Raised by damaged adults—a con-man grandfather and a manipulative grandmother, a violent, drunken father and a mother who was repeatedly institutionalized—Joe grew up in abject poverty, living in slums and projects when not on the road, crisscrossing the country in his father’s desperate attempts to escape the consequences of his past.

To survive his abusive environment Joe found refuge in his beloved comics and his dreams, immersing himself in imaginary worlds populated by superheroes whose amazing powers allowed them to overcome any adversity. The deeper he read, the more he came to realize that he, too, had a superpower: the ability to tell stories and make everything come out the way he wanted it. But even as he found success, he could not escape a dark and shocking secret that hung over his family’s past, a violent truth that he uncovered over the course of decades involving mass murder.

Harlan Ellison 1934 - 2018

Posted on 6/28/2018 by Jan in News

Harlan Ellison passed away in his sleep earlier today.

“For a brief time I was here, and for a brief time, I mattered.”—HE

Harlan was the Conceptual Consultant for Babylon 5, wrote the all-time favorite episode of Star Trek TOS, "The City on the Edge of Forever", was a Grandmaster of the SWFA and much more.

JMS posted:
My friend is gone. Without Harlan's words and his example, I would never have become a writer. He showed artists of all stripes how to protect the work and how to live with integrity and heart and fierce courage. The world is much smaller for his absence.

Arrangements for a celebration of his life are pending.

JMS Autobiography "Saved by Superman" Coming in Spring 2019

Posted on 1/17/2018 by Jan in News

Harper Voyager has announced that they will be publishing JMS' autobiography "Saved by Superman" in Spring 2019.

Voyager's editorial director, David Pomerico, long an enthusiast of Straczynski's many projects, notes, 'What surprised me about this memoir was how much I know about the animated shows Joe worked on, which shaped my childhood.' But, beyond fandom, it was the shocking strength of Joe's personal story that convinced the Voyager team to acquire this nonfiction work. 'His childhood was so absolutely beyond anything I could think someone could survive,' Pomerico shares. 'He didn't just come through-he thrived. And it is that story which is going to be an inspiration to artists and loners. It is simply captivating in its own right.'

Jerry Doyle Passes Away at 60 Years Old

Posted on 7/29/2016 by Jan in News

It was announced yesterday, July 28 that Jerry Doyle who played Security Chief Michael Garibaldi was found unresponsive in his Las Vegas home on July 27. No cause of death is known as yet.

In a statement remembering him, B5 Executive Producer said in part:

He was funny, and dangerous, and loyal, and a prankster, and a pain in the ass; he was gentle and cynical and hardened and insightful and sometimes as dense as a picket fence...and his passing is a profound loss to everyone who knew him, especially those of us who fought beside him in the trenches of Babylon 5. It is another loss in a string of losses that I cannot understand. Of the main cast, we have lost Richard Biggs, Michael O'Hare, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, and now Jerry Doyle, and I'm goddamned tired of it.

So dear sweet universe, if you are paying attention in the vastness of interstellar space, take a moment from plotting the trajectory of comets and designing new DNA in farflung cosmos, and spare a thought for those who you have plucked so untimely from our ranks...and knock it off for a while.

Because this isn't fair.

And Jerry Doyle would be the first person to tell you that. Right before he put a fist in your face. Which is what I imagine he's doing right now, on the other side of the veil.

JMS Announces B5 Feature Film Plans

Posted on 8/9/2014 by Jan in News

At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, JMS announced that his Studio JMS is enjoying a lot of success with 'Sense8' in production for Netflix, another one or two TV shows coming up and some other feature films in the works. JMS said:

Here’s the plan: We’re going to have, through Studio JMS, at least two, maybe three TV series on the air next year. We’re going to have at least one or two movies going ahead. And we’ll use that to parlay serious investment in the studio. I’m not talking Kickstarter, I’m talking about one hundred million dollars, two hundred million dollars; we already have people who are lined up and interested in doing that.

So in 2015 I will write a Babylon 5 screenplay. I’ll be giving Warner Bros. the opportunity – if they want to step up, “Help yourself”. If they don’t, 2016: We make it. I’m not going to wait around for more of our cast members to die.

The planned movie will have a budget of $80-100 million dollars and will be a reboot but JMS plans to use many of the original cast in other roles.

The upcoming Netflix series Sense8 began shooting in San Francisco this past week. More information on the international cast and crew including Naveen Andrews, Darryl Hannah, Doona Bae and several others was reported by Deadline Hollywood.

Here is the first detailed description of Sense8, courtesy of Straczynski, who serves as co-showrunner of the series alongside Lana and Andy Wachowski. “The series follows eight characters around the world who, in the aftermath of a tragic death, find themselves linked to each other mentally and emotionally,” he told Deadline. “They can not only see and talk to each other as though they were in the same place, they have access to each other’s deepest secrets. Not only must they figure out what happened and why and what it means for the future of humanity, they must do so netflix-logowhile being hunted by an organization out to capture, kill or vivisect them.”

Own the Desk Where JMS Wrote Babylon 5 (and more)

Posted on 5/23/2014 by Jan in News

Here's a piece of genuine genre history up for auction. In JMS' words:

I have written literally thousands of pages of material at this desk, starting with several seasons worth of Babylon 5, then Crusade, Jeremiah (for Showtime); the movies Changeling, Thor, Underworld Awakening, Ninja Assassin and World War Z; and over 200 published comic books. It was also at this desk that I co-wrote the first batch of scripts for Sense8, the new TV series about to go into production for Netflix.

JMS has written a message on the desk listing some of the things he wrote at it and encouraging the next person.

The Ebay auction is up and running and ends on May 27, 2014.

Studio JMS options Harlan Ellison's "Repent, Harlequin!, Said the TickTock Man"

Posted on 2/23/2014 by Jan in News

Deadline Hollywood posted an article about JMS optioning the Harlan Ellison short story in order to make it a feature film. The script is already written and approved by Ellison.

http://www.deadline.com/2014/02/j-michael-straczynski-options-harlan-ellisons-repent-harlequin-for-feature/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook

The story is about Everett C. Marm, an ordinary man who disguises himself as the anarchical Harlequin and engages in whimsical rebellion against the Ticktockman. The trouble is that if he is found out, the government could stop his heart at long distance if they learn who he is. Straczynski sees the cautionary tale as especially relevant in a post-Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street environment, or even Edward Snowden, in a story of a man who goes against the system and must pay the price for his actions. Now that the script is done, Straczynski will look for production partners and a director, and the first parties he will approach will be Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro. Ellison’s story won the 1966 Hugo Award and the 1965 Nebula Award, among others.

JMS Awarded Icon Award at SDCC

Posted on 7/22/2013 by Jan in News

JMS was given an Icon Award at his spotlight panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday:

Straczynski is the eighth person to receive the Comic-Con Icon Award. He joins previous Icon Award winners Frank Miller (2006), Neil Gaiman (2007), George Lucas (2008), Stan Lee (2009), Ray Bradbury (2010), June Foray (2011), and Matt Groening (2012).

JMS posted today:

I wanted to extend my thanks here to the good folks at SDCC who this weekend honored me with the International Icon Award. I had no idea it was coming, so I was clueless as to what they were going on about when I arrived for my spotlight to find folks waiting for me on stage. By the time I figured out it was an award, let alone an Icon award, it was time to step up onto the stage to receive it, so I don't know how coherent I was in my acceptance.

So I wanted to use this space to extend my thanks to everyone at the convention for this amazing recognition, an award that's only been given eight times or so in the long history of SDCC (to folks like George Lucas, Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury, Matt Groening and Stan Lee). It's an absolutely stunning honor, and I am infinitely appreciative.

Joe's Comics News

Posted on 2/28/2013 by Jan in News

TEN GRAND, the first offering from the revived Joe's Comics imprint will be coming May 1 with art by Ben Templesmith. JMS will debut the first issue at the C2E2 convention in late April. TEN GRAND is described as:

The premise: Joe Fitzgerald was a mob enforcer until the day he met Laura, who convinced him to leave that world behind. Before quitting, Joe agrees to one last job, little realizing that the man he's been sent to kill was deeply involved in demonlogy. He survives Joe's attempt and comes after him, fatally wounding Joe and killing Laura. As he lies dying, an angelic force promises that if Joel agrees to work for them as a different kind of enforcer, they will bring him to life and keep on bringing him to life every time he is killed in a righteous cause. The reward: for those five minutes of death, he will be with Laura again. Would you endure an eternity of pain and death, dying over and over, to be with the woman you love for just five minutes each time you died? Most people might say no. But Joe Fitzgerald isn't most people.

JMS Writing "Shadowman" Movie

Posted on 10/12/2012 by Jan in News

From Deadline.com:

Valiant Entertainment and The Mummy producer Sean Daniel are teaming up to turn the Valiant Comic Shadowman into a live action feature. They've made a deal with J. Michael Straczynski to write the script.

JMS says:
"Shadowman is a character who lives in a unique world that mixes the modern world with that which is most ancient within us," Straczynski. "The New Orleans vibe and history, and the struggle to find a balance with the personality within him, is a perfect dramatic vehicle. We've already finished the outline and there's a lot of action, much of it unique to what Shadowman can do.but at the core of it, there's a strong character, world and mythology that can be explored across multiple subsequent films. This is gonna be fun."

All Fans at Comic-Con: JMS Message!

Posted on 7/9/2012 by Jan in News

From Facebook:

I've never done this before. Never convened a meeting of the clans before. But this is important.

If you've ever enjoyed the work I've done in comics: the bulk of my run on The Amazing Spider-Man, or Thor, or Silver Surfer: Requiem or Supreme Power or Rising Stars or Midnight Nation or Superman: Earth One -

If you've ever been entertained by the work I've done in television, going all the way ...back to He-Man to The Real Ghostbusters, Twilight Zone, Babylon 5, Crusade or Jeremiah -

If you've followed the work I've done in movies, from Changeling to Thor or Underworld Awakening -

If the work I've done has moved you or touched you or made you think about a few things in new ways...and if you're going to be at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday or you know someone who will...then I'm inviting you to come to my spotlight at 2:00 in room 7AB, where something extraordinary will be launched into the world.

I can guarantee that you will see at least one thing that you have never seen before.

And how many times in life does that happen?

JMS Schedule at San Diego Comic-Con

Posted on 6/18/2012 by Jan in News

JMS has posted his schedule for Saturday July 14 along with these tantalizing hints:

My Saturday schedule at San Diego Comic Con: 11:15 DC graphic novel panel; 12:45 Before Watchmen; 2:00 spotlight; 3:30 signing. If all goes as planned, expect some really massive news at the spotlight. (Not necessarily B5 related.)

Of all the spotlights I've done, this may be the single most important...something I've been working toward for over a year now. For the folks attending SDCC, spread the word, because this is one you're NOT going to want to miss.

RIP Jeff Conaway 1950 - 2011

Posted on 5/27/2011 by Jan in News

Jeff Conaway, known to Babylon 5 fans as the actor who portrayed Zack Allan, has passed away after fighting pneumonia and blood sepsis. He had been admitted to the hospital on May 11 after being found unconscious at his home. He never regained consciousness and life support measures were withdrawn on Thursday afternoon, May 26. He passed away on Friday morning, May 27.

In addition to his Babylon 5 role, Jeff was famous for playing Kenickie in the musical "Grease" both on film and on Broadway and for playing the part of Bobby Wheeler on the TV series "Taxi".

In 1997, Jeff told interviewer Joe Nazzaro:

I feel very fortunate about the work I've been able to do, and hopefully the next 20 or 30 years of my career, now that the beast inside is staying there, I'll be lucky enough to grab onto a couple more big projects. Most people are never in a hit, let alone something that will run forever. I'm going to be Kenickie and Bobby Wheeler and Zack Allen for the rest of my life, and it's kind of fun now when people start calling me Zack!'

JMS looking for animator

Posted on 5/15/2011 by Jan in News

Found on JMS' Facebook page:
Fans of J. Michael Straczynski:
So I'm putting together a spec animated project (non-B5) from my own script and I need to find a solid animation guy or gal who's good at character, can create a noir environment, but with somewhat comic material. It can be 2D, doesn't need to be 3D. I'm doing this out of pocket so I can't afford to pay a lot, but it's a good opportunity for somebody new and talented with the artistic chops.

Fans of J. Michael Straczynski:
It could be a perfect break for someone who's just graduated, but has the needed skill set. Again, it's not a lot of money, but for someone looking to break in there may be some resume value in working on a "jms project." They can email me at jmsatb5@aol.com

JMS Updates - April 20

Posted on 4/21/2011 by Jan in News

JMS posted some updates on his current projects:

JMS: Just turned in what one hopes will be the last revision on Shattered Union for Bruckheimer, and moving on to start writing on Vanishing Point, also for Bruckheimer (these are intended as big tent-pole summer movies)...got word that the B5 r...elated stuff is still proceeding along, just can't say anything yet...artwork on Superman Earth One volume 2 is coming along swimmingly, looks great, with lots of funny stuff, personal stuff and cool action with a redesigned Big Bad familiar to Superman fans...have accepted an invite to talk at the Lake Arrowhead Writers Guild Conference in June (only open to WGA members)...the Houdini screenplay for Dreamworks is being budgeted and sent to directors...I just did a short piece for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund's yearly Liberty Comic...and I'll be going out to the networks to pitch a couple of projects to develop for next year. Otherwise it's pretty quiet.

JMS: Re: the B5 thing...I'm not being coy, it's just that over the years, it's like B5 has been the football, the fans (and I to a degree) have been Charlie Brown, and the studios/networks have dutifully executed their role as Lucy. Consequently, I'm not saying anyTHING to anyONE for any REASON until I know for a stone cold fact that there's ink on contracts and we're moving ahead on something of substance.

Recent Updates from JMS

Posted on 8/9/2010 by Jan in News

JMS has created a Fans of J. Michael Straczynski Facebook page and has posted several updates recently:

- Quick note of apologies to our friends north of the border...I've had to cancel out my appearance at the Fan Expo in Toronto later this month (which was always contingent on work) due to the press of work here. Between having been down with bronchitis and then SDCC, I've fallen behind on scripts for DC and elsewhere, and need to catch up, so with regrets and apologies to our Canadian friends, I have to bow out.

Re: The final issues of "The Twelve":
- Just to let folks know that the book will be coming out. Chris and I have circled different deadlines and schedules...sometimes I was on and he w...as off doing Book of Eli, then he was on and I was off...but sonuvagun, it's going to get done. And here's the proof for those who've scoffed.

Sales numbers for his first full issue of Wonder Woman:
- We've gotten the sales figures on my first full Wonder Woman issue, and DC is very, very happy. Everyone was wondering how the first regular book would do, and we came in at 38. The regular book in the four months prior to the anniversary issue had come in at 71, 85, 78 and 82, respecitively, so we've jumped 47 from ...the lowest point, or nearly halfway up top 100 rankings. We're off to a great start.

The Birth of Babylon 5

Posted on 3/31/2009 by Jan in News

In 1999, J. Michael Straczynski allowed his original notes on Babylon 5 to be released via his Last Word column in the Babylon 5 Magazine (Vol. 2, Issue 9). These notes were the first written record of Babylon 5, made moments after he had his inspiration for the series while taking a shower.

Though the magazine is long gone, on this, the 10th anniversary of this column's publication, he wanted to share the origins of Babylon 5 again. While many fans saw them when they were originally published, he realizes that many more have not.

Fans support the striking writers

Posted on 11/11/2007 by Jan in News

A grassroots effort has begun for fans to support the writers in their fight for a fair contract. fans4writers.com has grown out of a group of fans at whedonesque.com to deliver pizzas to the striking writers. It's now encompassing any and all fandoms because we have a unique opportunity to let the world know that when the writers went on strike, so did we fans.

What can you do? Organize food drops to the striking writers if you can. Send a postcard or letter to the AMPTP to let them know how you feel. Don't forget to let the advertisers of your favorite shows know that you support the writers. Sign the petition in support of the WGA. The fans4writers.com folks are accepting donations with plans to a) continue food drops, b) place ads in the 'trades' showing our support and c) contribute to the WGA fund to help support the striking writers.

JMSNews.com salutes these efforts and encourages all fans to get involved.

This is a bit off-topic, but I thought I'd let you know about a new site I created at weeklyreleases.com. The purpose of the site is to make it easy to view new DVD, CD, Books, and game releases each week. One of my goals was to display lots of products with large images on one page. This results in the site being very bandwidth hungry, however if you have a fast internet connection all is good. Please check it out if that sounds interesting.

The JMSNews forums are back on-line. I upgraded the site to vBulletin 3.0 so please let me know if you encounter any problems. Thanks for your patience over the last week while I restored the site.

Posted on 2/27/2005 by DougO in News

Restoring the JMSNews forums has taken longer than expected. The good news is that the forums are almost ready to go live. I have updated to vBulletin version 3.0 which required porting the database to the new system. This unfortunately did not go as smooth as hoped but I have worked out most of the issues. I expect the forums to be available Sunday morning. Thanks for your patience.

Update: My goal is to have the JMSNews Forums up and running late Thursday. Thank you for your patience.

The extended server outage over the past couple days was due to a malicious user gaining access to the server. Unfortunately this required the machine to be reformatted and re-installed from scratch. I'm still investigating the source of the security breach and am only bring services back that I'm sure are secure. Unfortunately this means the JMSNews Forums will be down for at least another day while I evaluate its security. The mail server is also offline. If required I can be contacted <a href="mailto:dougo@nwlink.com">here</a>. I apologize for the inconvenience.
